What mylar actually is
The word gets used loosely. Mylar is a brand name for a type of polyester film, and in packaging it usually means a laminate: an outer printable layer, a metallized or foil layer that does the barrier work, and an inner heat-seal layer that bonds when the bag is closed. The layers matter more than the name. More layers, or a thicker barrier, give more protection but a stiffer feel. For dry goods that lose quality from light and air, this structure is a good fit. It is not a shatter-proof container, and it will not do anything for liquids or items with sharp edges.
Choosing a bag format
Pick the format by how the bag is used. Stand-up pouches have a bottom gusset and show a full front panel on a shelf. Flat pouches, sealed on three sides, suit samples, small fills and items that sell in a rack or a mailer. A zipper lets the customer reopen the bag, and a tear notch gives a clean first opening. Sizing the bag to the product
Fill a plain sample bag with your real product, and not a water-weight estimate. Leave roughly a third of the height free above the fill for the seal and zipper. Then measure the outside width, height and, for stand-up pouches, the bottom gusset. Light, bulky products like snacks need more volume than their weight suggests, and dense powders need less. Send us the numbers and we draw the template, with the print area and seal zones marked so your artwork does not run into them.
Print quality is worth a conversation. Metallized film is silver underneath, so unless the design uses a white base layer, colors pick up a metallic tint. Some brands love that and use it deliberately. If you want true, flat color, ask for a white underprint on the areas that need it, and expect the proof to show it. A matte finish tends to read calmer and more upmarket, while gloss gives the strongest shine and also shows fingerprints more.
Handling matters just as much as print. Dry goods packed warm, or in a humid room, trap moisture inside the bag no matter how good the barrier is. Fill in a dry space, press out excess air before sealing, and close the zipper completely each time. Those habits do more for shelf life than adding another film layer.
