What changes when mylar goes biodegradable

Standard mylar is metallized polyester. It blocks light, resists moisture and holds aroma well, and it does not break down in any practical timeframe. A biodegradable build swaps that film for a kraft paper outer with a plant-based lining, such as PLA, or a similar structure. You gain a lower-plastic story and a natural look. You usually give up some barrier strength. The bag may not hold aroma or block oxygen as long as true metallized film, which matters for coffee, edibles, herbs and anything that goes stale. If shelf life is the main concern, say so before we quote, because it decides the structure.

Be careful with the word biodegradable

This is the part most sellers gloss over. Biodegradable, compostable and recyclable are three different claims, and each has its own test standards and its own rules on what you can print. A bag that breaks down in an industrial composter may not break down in a backyard bin, and may not be accepted by your local recycler at all. Ask for the exact film specification, check it against the claim you plan to print, and confirm with your own regulatory adviser, especially for food, cannabis or supplements, where packaging and labeling rules also apply.

Sizing and closures

Size a pouch by the volume of what goes in, not only the label. Measure the filled product, stand it up if the bag is a stand-up style, and leave headspace at the top for the closure. Common closures are a zipper and a heat-seal strip, and which one suits you depends on the structure and the product. A stand-up bag needs a gusset sized to the weight of the contents. One more practical test: fill a sample bag with your actual product, seal it, and leave it for a few weeks in conditions like your shelf or warehouse. Compare smell, crispness and color against a standard pouch. It is a low-tech check, but it tells you more about this structure than any spec sheet will.

Print on a paper-based film

Printing on kraft-faced pouches behaves like printing on any kraft board: colors print darker and warmer, and white areas need a white base to look white. Bold single-color artwork looks natural on this material, and fine detail or pale pastels tend to disappear. If the design relies on a bright, saturated color, ask for a proof. Metallic shine is another thing you give up, since the foil effect comes from the film you are replacing.
