What makes a kraft box genuinely eco-friendly
The board is only half of it. A kraft box covered in plastic lamination, metallic foil and a glued-in plastic window is still brown, but it is a lot harder to recycle. The simplest eco pack is uncoated or lightly coated kraft board, one or two ink colors, and a closure that needs no glue-on extras. Fewer materials in the box means an easier job for the recycler.
Be careful with the claims you print. Terms like recyclable, compostable or made from recycled content are regulated in the US, and each needs support. We cannot certify any of that for you. Ask us for the board spec, then check your claim with your own adviser before it goes on the box.
Kraft board or corrugated kraft
Kraft paperboard is a single-layer folding carton stock, good for retail boxes that hold lightweight goods such as soap, candles, cosmetics and small gifts. Corrugated kraft has a fluted layer between two liners, which is what you want for shipping. E-flute is thin enough to print neatly and still protect, while B-flute is thicker and takes more abuse. If the box is staying on a shelf, folding kraft is lighter and cheaper to ship. If it is going through a courier network, choose corrugated and accept the extra bulk.
Getting the print to look right on brown
Kraft is not white, and the ink never behaves as it does on a white sheet. Light colors disappear. White ink has to be printed as a spot layer, and it will look slightly translucent. Dark brown, black and deep green read beautifully on kraft, so build your artwork around those. If a bright logo color matters, a white kraft box gives a brighter base while keeping the paper feel.

Moisture is the quiet weakness of kraft. Corrugated that sits in a damp warehouse loses stiffness, and a stack of boxes on the bottom row can crush. If your stock room is humid, store boxes off the floor and ask us about board weight before you order, because a heavier liner makes a noticeable difference to stacking strength.
Inserts deserve a thought as well. A molded plastic tray defeats the point of an eco pack. Paper-based dividers, folded board cradles and simple tissue wrap protect most products just as well, and they go in the same bin as the box.
Choosing the right style

Do not oversize. A box that is too big wastes board and fills with void fill, which cancels the green benefit you were after. Measure your product, add about 1/8 inch clearance per side for a folding carton, and keep the structure tight.
