An eco friendly soap box is a paperboard carton or sleeve for a bar of soap that has no plastic in it and nothing that stops it going in the paper recycling: uncoated or aqueous coated kraft or recycled board, water based inks, no film window or a window left open, and no lamination. We make them as tuck end cartons, open sleeves, belly bands and pillow boxes, sized to the bar, in any quantity and with no minimum order. The number that matters is the bar: a standard 4 ounce bar is about 3.5 by 2.25 by 1 inch, and the box adds an eighth of an inch of clearance each way so the bar slides in and the box still closes square.

Soap and sustainability attract the same buyer, which is why plastic wrap on a natural bar sends a mixed message. A plain kraft carton says what the soap says. The trick is doing it honestly: no claims that cannot be checked, no coating that quietly defeats the recycling, and a structure that lets the bar breathe, because a cold process bar keeps curing in the box.

Structures and sizes

Four structures cover nearly every bar. A tuck end carton fully encloses the bar and takes the most print. An open sleeve slides over the bar and shows the two ends, which is the classic handmade look and uses the least board. A belly band is a printed strip around the bar for brands that want the soap itself on show. A pillow box suits round and oval bars and gift sets.

Letting the bar breathe

Cold process soap keeps losing water for weeks after it is cut. Sealed in a coated box it can sweat and soften the board; in an open sleeve or a carton with an open window it cures on. For fully enclosed cartons we add small vent slots in the end flaps, which do not show and keep the box dry. Melt and pour and glycerin bars are the opposite: they draw moisture from the air, so they want a fully enclosed carton, and a plain paper wrap inside it.

Print

One or two colors on kraft is the eco look and the lowest impact. Full color on recycled white board is available with water based inks for brands with color heavy designs. Print the ingredients and weight panel on the back, a scent name on the end flap so bars can be found in a stack, and leave a blank panel if you hand stamp batch dates. A blind emboss of the logo on kraft is a finish that adds nothing to the waste stream.

Eco friendly soap box questions

  1. What makes a soap box eco friendly?

No plastic in it: uncoated or aqueous coated kraft or recycled board, water based inks, a window cut open rather than filmed, and no lamination. That combination goes in the paper recycling whole. A small foil logo does not change that; a film window or a laminated finish does.

  2. What size box does a 4 ounce bar of soap need?

A standard 4 ounce bar is about 3.5 by 2.25 by 1 inch, so a tuck end carton of 3.625 by 2.375 by 1.125 inches inside, or a sleeve 2.25 inches wide. Add an eighth of an inch of clearance each way and the bar slides in and the box closes square.

  3. Sleeve or carton for handmade soap?

A sleeve shows the bar, uses the least board and lets cold process soap breathe as it cures, so it is the classic choice for handmade bars. A carton takes more print and protects the bar in transit; for cold process we add vent slots so it does not sweat. Glycerin and melt and pour bars want the enclosed carton.

  4. Can an eco soap box have a window?

Yes, cut open with no film. It shows the bar, lets it breathe, and keeps the box in the paper stream. A film window looks cleaner but has to be removed before recycling, so we leave it off eco boxes.

  5. Is there a minimum order?

No. A first batch of fifty or a full run. Free design and dieline, free samples to fit your own bars, and a printed proof before the run.

No minimum order. One or a full run. Free design and dieline, and a printed proof before production. Free samples so you can slide your own bar in before you commit. Price match: send a written quote for the same size, board, print and quantity and we will beat it.

Eco friendly soap boxes with nothing in them that stops recycling

Tuck end cartons, open sleeves, belly bands and pillow boxes in uncoated or aqueous coated kraft and recycled board, water based inks, open windows with no film, no lamination. Sized to the bar with an eighth of an inch of clearance: 3.625 by 2.375 by 1.125 inside for a standard 4 ounce bar. Vent slots for cold process bars, enclosed cartons for glycerin. One or two color kraft or full color recycled white. No minimum order, free design and dieline, free samples.

Cold process, melt and pour, glycerin: the box changes

Cold process bars keep curing after they are cut, so they want air: an open sleeve, an open window, or vent slots in an enclosed carton. Glycerin and melt and pour bars draw moisture from the air and want the opposite: a fully enclosed carton with a paper wrap inside. Tell us which you make and we will build the box to suit it, in board and ink that go in the paper recycling whole, and send samples to fit your own bars.
