Auto Bottom Counter Display Boxes

Auto bottom counter display boxes are printed cartons with a crash-lock base that snaps into shape when you open the box, built to sit on a shop counter and show product. TBPB makes them custom with no minimum order, and if you bring a written quote for the same specs we will beat it.

Why the auto bottom matters

A standard glued carton has to be folded and taped on the bottom before it can stand. An auto bottom, also called a crash-lock or snap-lock base, has glued flaps that spring into place when you pull the carton open, so a shop assistant can set one up in a few seconds. That sounds minor, but displays that take ten minutes to assemble tend to stay in the stockroom. If you sell through shops with little spare staff, quick set-up is a sales feature.

How the display is built

The carton arrives flat with the side seam already glued. Open it out and the base locks automatically, and the top has either a tuck flap, a hinged lid or an open front, depending on the design. The front panel is usually cut lower or angled, so shoppers can see and grab the product without lifting a lid. Some designs add a header panel at the back for branding. Because the structure is all one piece of paperboard, it prints on every face in full colour.

Weight is the main limit. The auto bottom carries light-to-moderate products well but is not meant for heavy goods stacked high, because the snap base can flex under a lot of load. For heavier items, ask about a reinforced base card or a different structure.

Board, size and print

Most auto bottom displays use folding carton paperboard in the 18 to 24 point range, and corrugated E-flute for heavier loads or bigger footprints. Size the display by the product it holds: measure one unit, decide how many sit in each row and how many rows deep, and add a little clearance so the units come out without catching. Keep the counter footprint small. A display that takes over half the till area will be moved, so it will not sell.

Print options are full-colour CMYK, Pantone matching, matte or gloss aqueous coating, soft-touch lamination and spot UV on the logo. A clear header message, such as the product name and one benefit, works harder than a busy design. Remember the display is seen from a distance of a metre or two, so large type wins.

When another structure is smarter

If the product is heavy, or the display will sit on the floor rather than a counter, an auto bottom is the wrong tool; a corrugated floor display with a stronger base will last longer. If the retailer wants to ship product and display together, a shelf-ready tray that tears open can be a better fit. And if you only need to show a single hero item, a small stand-up card may be enough. We would rather tell you that on the first call.
