Display Lid Boxes

A display lid box ships and stores like a normal carton, then converts into a counter display when the lid is lifted off, folded back or torn away along a perforation. TBPB builds custom display lid boxes to your product size in paperboard or corrugated, printed in full colour, with no minimum order.

A display lid box is a carton with a lid designed to come off, fold back or tear away so the base becomes a ready-made display for the product inside. TBPB makes them to your size with no minimum order, and if you bring a written quote for the same specs, we beat it.

One carton, two jobs

The point of this style is that the retailer does not have to unpack anything. A store clerk cuts the tape, lifts the lid and sets the base on the counter or shelf with the product already facing the customer. That saves shelf-stocking time, and it is why display lid boxes are common for candy, gum, small tools, cosmetics samples, batteries and other impulse items sold by the unit.

Lid styles and how they behave

There are three main ways to build the lid, and each one suits a different store routine. A lift-off lid is the simplest and can be reused to close the box again. A hinged lid folds back and stays attached, which works as a small header panel standing behind the product. A tear-away lid has a perforated line and gives the cleanest look once removed, but it cannot be put back, so it suits single-use shelf displays.

The front wall of the base matters just as much. Some designs have a scooped or lowered front so the product can be reached without lifting it out. If your items are small and loose, ask for a lowered front. If they are tall, a straight wall keeps them upright.

Choosing the board

Lightweight products, such as candy bars or lip balms, are fine in folding-carton paperboard in the 18 to 24 pt range. Heavier loads, like tools or bottled goods, and anything that gets bulk-shipped before display, need a corrugated build so the base does not buckle when the lid is opened. Corrugated can be printed directly or wrapped in a printed paper layer for sharper graphics.

Sizing for the display, not just the product

Measure one unit, then decide how many fit across and how deep each row goes. Allow roughly 1/8 inch of clearance per side so units slide out freely. A box that holds twelve units in a neat grid looks better on a counter than one with spare room, so size to a full count rather than a rough one. Tell us the count and the unit dimensions and we will work out the footprint.

Print and finishing

Full-colour CMYK covers the lid, base and inner panels, and Pantone matching keeps brand colours steady from one run to the next. Aqueous coating in matte or gloss handles the wear of a busy counter. Spot UV or foil on the lid draws the eye without adding another printed layer.

  • Style: carton base with lift-off, hinged or tear-away display lid
  • Board: folding-carton paperboard or corrugated
  • Front wall: straight, lowered or scooped for easy reach
  • Print: CMYK or Pantone on lid, base and inside
  • Finishes: aqueous matte or gloss, spot UV, soft-touch, foil
  • Quantity: no minimum order

When another display format fits better

If you want the product visible before anyone opens anything, clear lid boxes show it through the lid. When the display should stand taller and hold more products on the checkout counter, counter display boxes give more height and graphic space. For something that ships flat and pops up in the store, see pop-up display boxes, or browse all custom display boxes.

Send the unit dimensions, the count per box and the quantity, even if it is one, and TBPB will draw the dieline and quote it.

Frequently asked questions

  1. Is there a minimum order for custom display lid boxes?

No. There is no minimum order, so you can start with a single prototype to test the lid action in your store or order thousands for a retail rollout. The price-beat guarantee applies at any quantity.

  2. What is a display lid box used for?

It protects product in storage and transit, then turns into a counter or shelf display when the lid is lifted, folded back or torn off. Retailers like it because staff do not unpack the items individually. It is common for impulse products sold by the unit.

  3. Should the lid tear away or lift off?

Choose tear-away for a clean, single-use shelf display with no loose lid to lose. Choose lift-off when you want the lid to close the box again, or hinged when the lid should stand up as a header panel behind the product.

  4. Can I ship display lid boxes by mail?

Yes, but board matters. A paperboard version may need an outer shipper, while a corrugated build handles carrier handling better. Tell us whether the boxes go directly to customers or to stores and we will suggest the right construction.

  5. How do I work out the right size?

Measure one unit, decide how many sit across and how many rows deep, and add about 1/8 inch per side for clearance. Sizing to a full count keeps the display tidy. Send the unit dimensions and count and TBPB calculates the footprint.

  6. Can I print on the inside of the lid?

Yes. Full-colour CMYK can run on the outside, inside or both. Inside lid print is useful when the lid folds back to act as a header, since that panel is the one customers see once the box is open.

Product Overview

The display lid box is a carton that doubles as point-of-sale display. The lid lifts off, folds back or tears away along a perforation, and the base is left holding the product ready for the shelf or checkout counter. Retailers prefer it because there is nothing to unpack, and brands prefer it because the printed lid and inner panels carry the message right at the point of purchase. TBPB builds each one to your unit size and count in paperboard or corrugated, with no minimum order and a price-beat guarantee on every quote.

Learn More About Display Lid Boxes

Decide how the store will use it. A tear-away lid gives the cleanest single-use display, a lift-off lid can close the box again, and a hinged lid becomes a small header behind the product. Then pick the board by weight: paperboard for light items such as candy and lip balm, corrugated for tools, bottles and anything that is bulk-shipped before it is displayed. Size the base to a whole count of units, with about 1/8 inch of clearance per side. If you give us the unit dimensions and the count per box, we will draw the dieline.
