Pouches are specified by width, height and bottom gusset, but they are bought by fill weight, and the two only line up if you know the density of what you are filling. The table below assumes a mid density product such as ground coffee, granola or protein powder. A light, airy product such as puffed snacks or dried herbs needs a noticeably larger pouch for the same weight on the label.

How to size a pouch properly
The reliable method takes five minutes and prevents the commonest expensive mistake, which is a pouch that is technically the right volume but will not stand up.
- Weigh a filled sample of your actual product in a measuring jug and note the volume it occupies. That gives you the bulk density, which is the number that matters.
- Leave headspace. A pouch filled to the top will not seal cleanly and will not stand. Allow roughly fifteen to twenty percent of the height above the fill line, more if the product settles.
- Check it stands when it is half empty. Customers judge the pouch after a week, not on day one. A pouch that slumps once it is part used reads as cheap.
- Match the gusset to the weight. A deeper bottom gusset gives a wider base and a more stable pouch. This is what usually needs adjusting when a sample will not stand.
