Yes, The Best Price Boxes makes custom food boxes with no minimum order, and we will beat any written quote you already have. Food packaging is the one category where the material specification matters more than the design. Grease, steam and moisture all attack paperboard, direct food contact restricts what the board can be made from, and the words compostable and recyclable have specific meanings that a supplier should be able to evidence rather than assert.

The three enemies of a food box
Every food packaging failure is one of three things, and each has a different answer.
Grease. Fat migrates into uncoated board and shows as a dark stain, often within the hour. It weakens the base and transfers to hands and clothing. The answer is a grease resistant board where the barrier is built into the sheet, or a clay coated inner surface.
Steam. Hot food releases moisture that condenses on the lid and runs back down. Fried food goes soft, pastry goes limp, and the customer blames the food. The answer is die cut vents, which cost almost nothing. The trade off is that vents shorten how long food stays hot, which for a short delivery run is the right trade and for a long one may not be.
Liquid. Sauces and wet food will find any unsealed seam. The answer is a coated board and a format with sealed or folded seams rather than open ones, or a separate lidded container inside a printed outer.
Most food packaging complaints trace back to specifying for one of these and ignoring the other two.
PFAS, and why grease resistance changed
Grease resistance in paper food packaging was historically achieved using per and polyfluoroalkyl substances, known as PFAS. Several US states have now banned intentionally added PFAS in food packaging, and manufacturers have moved away from those treatments for food contact paper.
The practical point is simple. If you sell in more than one state, ask your supplier to confirm in writing that the board has no intentionally added PFAS. Grease resistant alternatives are widely available and perform well. We supply that confirmation as a matter of course rather than waiting to be asked.
Recycled board and direct food contact
This one surprises brands who are trying to do the right thing.
Recycled fiber can carry residues from its previous life, including mineral oil components from printing inks in the recovered paper stream. For that reason recycled board is often not suitable for direct contact with food, particularly fatty or dry powdery food where migration is more likely, unless there is a functional barrier between the board and the product.
So the honest answer to can I use recycled board for my food packaging is usually this. Yes for the outer, yes with a barrier layer or an inner wrap, and not straightforwardly for a surface touching food directly. A supplier who says yes without qualification has not thought about it.
Compostable, recyclable, and what you can actually claim
These words are not interchangeable and both are testable, so a claim should be evidenced.
Recyclable, for paperboard, generally holds where the board is uncoated or aqueous coated. A film lamination or a plastic window makes separation harder and undermines the claim.
Compostable is a defined standard, not a description. Certification for compostable packaging references recognized test standards, and certified products carry a mark from a certification body. Compostable also means industrially compostable in most cases, which requires a facility that accepts it. If your customers do not have access to one, the practical outcome may be no better than landfill, and it is worth being honest with yourself about that before you pay for it.
Our position is straightforward. We will tell you which combination of board and finish supports the claim you want to make, and we will not sell you a finish and a claim that contradict each other.
Choosing the format
| Food | Usual format | Key spec |
|---|---|---|
| Fries and fried sides | Open scoop or fry box | Grease resistance, open top so steam escapes |
| Burgers and sandwiches | Clamshell or wedge | Grease resistance plus a vent, or the bun goes soft |
| Rice, noodles, wet mains | Pail or lidded tray | Coated board, sealed seams, leak resistance |
| Meal kits and multi item | Tray with a separate lid or a compartment tray | Compartments stop transfer of moisture between items |
| Salads and cold food | Tray with a film window lid | Visibility matters more than venting |
| Bakery and pastry | Auto lock bottom with a tuck top | Grease resistance and vents together |
Delivery changes the specification
A box handed over a counter and eaten in five minutes is a different problem from one that spends 25 minutes in a delivery bag stacked under two others.
For delivery, three things change. Stacking strength matters, because your box is at the bottom of someone’s bag, so board weight or a corrugated format earns its cost. Venting matters more, because the food sits longer. And seam integrity matters more, because the box will be tilted.
If most of your volume is delivery, specify for delivery and accept that it costs more than a dine in box. The alternative is paying for the refunds instead.
What a food box will not do
It will not keep food hot. Insulation comes from the delivery bag, not the carton, and a vented box actively loses heat faster in exchange for keeping food crisp.
It is not a barrier for shelf life. Packaged food needing oxygen or moisture barrier protection needs a sealed inner, and the carton does branding, structure and information.
And it is not a shipper. If you post food, the food box goes inside a corrugated shipping box with the appropriate insulation and insert.

Frequently asked questions
Do you have a minimum order for food boxes?
No. There is no minimum. Food businesses usually need several formats across a menu rather than one design in bulk, and that is exactly what no minimum is for.
Are your food boxes PFAS free?
We supply grease resistant boards with no intentionally added PFAS, and we provide confirmation as standard. Several states now require it, so if you sell in more than one, ask for that confirmation in writing from any supplier.
Can I use recycled board for food packaging?
For outer packaging, yes. For a surface in direct contact with food it is often unsuitable without a functional barrier, because recycled fiber can carry residues from the recovered paper stream. Use it for the outer, or with an inner wrap or barrier layer.
How do I stop fried food going soggy?
Vent the box. Steam from hot food condenses on the lid and runs back down, and vents let it escape. Pair that with grease resistant board so the base does not stain and weaken.
What does compostable actually mean?
It refers to certification against defined test standards, usually for industrial composting rather than home composting. Ask for the certification, and ask whether your customers have access to a facility that accepts it, because without one the practical benefit may not exist.
Can you beat a quote I already have?
Yes. Send the written quote with the specification and we will beat it on a like for like build. We will also flag a quote with no grease barrier on a fried food format, which is the most common gap we find in food packaging quotes.
