What actually makes a box more sustainable
- Less material. A right-sized box beats an oversized one every time.
- Recycled content. Kraft and recycled paperboard reduce the demand for virgin fiber.
- Plain finishes. Water-based coatings and uncoated surfaces are generally easier to recycle than plastic film lamination.
- Mono-material construction. A box made from paper alone, with paper-based closures, recycles more easily than one mixed with plastic windows or foam.
Be careful with claims
Terms like recyclable, compostable, and biodegradable have specific meanings, and some are regulated. Recyclability depends on your customer’s local program, not just the board. Check with your supplier on the exact board and coating, and avoid vague words such as “green” without a basis. Regulators and customers both react badly to claims that cannot be supported.
Where to start
Kraft mailer boxes and folding cartons are the simplest starting point. They are widely recycled, print well with one or two colors, and look natural. If you need a window, ask about a paper or compostable film alternative to plastic.
