A doll box is a tall window box: a printed carton with a clear front, a printed backer card behind the doll and ties or a die-cut insert that hold the doll, outfit and accessories in place. The window shows the face and outfit, the backer turns the box into a little stage, and the insert keeps everything from sliding to the bottom in transit. Collector and fashion dolls often move up to rigid boxes with lift-off lids. This guide covers the styles, the parts, sizing and design, for brands making doll packaging in the U.S.
Doll box parts
- Outer carton with a front window.
- Clear window film that keeps dust and fingers out.
- Backer card printed with a scene or brand art.
- Insert or ties that hold the doll at the head, waist and feet.
- Accessory tray with a slot for each piece.
- Hang tab if it will hang on a peg.
Doll box styles
| Style | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Window box | Fashion dolls, baby dolls, play sets | The standard. Clear front, printed backer, insert inside. |
| Window box with side windows | Dolls with detailed outfits | Extra windows on the sides show the profile. Needs a stiffer board. |
| Hang tab window box | Smaller dolls on peg walls | Reinforced top with a euro slot or hook hole. |
| Rigid box | Collector and limited edition dolls | Lift-off or magnetic lid, fabric or foam lining, kept for display. |
| Collectible box with insert | Art dolls, porcelain, resin | A foam cradle cut to the doll for fragile pieces. |
Holding the doll in place
Most doll packaging failures happen inside the box. A doll that is not held at several points slides down, the outfit rumples and the hair flattens against the window. Three things fix it:
- A shaped insert. A die-cut paperboard or foam insert with a cavity for the body keeps the pose. It is easier to recycle than plastic and quicker to pack than ties.
- Hair and outfit protection. A light sleeve or tissue over the hair, and a backer card set far enough from the window that the outfit is not pressed flat.
- Accessories in their own slots. Shoes, brushes and bags each get a cutout in an accessory tray so nothing rattles loose.
Sizing a doll box
Measure the doll standing, from the top of the hair to the base of the feet or stand, then the widest point with arms in the packed pose and the depth with the outfit on. Add the accessory tray if it sits beside the doll rather than behind. Leave a little room so the window film is not touching the face. We draw the box and insert to your doll at no charge and confirm the fit on a sample.
Doll lines are sold by size, so plan the family of boxes together. If three sizes of doll share one artwork system, the boxes look like a range on the shelf instead of three separate products.
Designing the box
- Front: the doll is the hero. Name, line and age grade across the top, window as large as the board allows.
- Backer card: a room, a city street or a pattern from the outfit. It is the one part of the box people see every day if they keep the doll boxed.
- Back: the rest of the line, a short character story, the barcode and the legal panel.
- Legal copy: tracking label, country of origin, producer name and address, and a choking hazard warning if small accessories go to children aged 3 to 6. See the toy labeling guide.
- Finish: soft-touch or matte for collector lines, gloss lamination for toy aisle durability, foil on the logo either way.
Shipping doll boxes
Window boxes are tall and light, which makes them easy to crush at the corners. Ship them upright in a corrugated case that fits the retail boxes closely, with the windows facing each other or toward a divider. For online orders, put the retail box inside a plain shipping box rather than labeling the window box directly.
