How a partial overlap box is built

All three slotted styles start the same way: a single sheet of corrugated, slotted at the corners, folded into a tube and joined at a manufacturer’s joint. The difference is flap length. On a regular slotted container (RSC) the flaps are each half the box width, so they meet in the middle and leave a seam. On a full overlap (FOL) the outer flaps are the full width and cover the whole panel. A partial overlap sits between the two: the outer flaps run past the center and lap over the inner flaps, but they stop short of the far wall.

That extra lap matters at the seam. It gives tape a second layer to bond to and keeps dust, rain splash and stray blade cuts from reaching the product through the gap.

POL earns its place on long, narrow cartons: tools, rods, rolled goods, bottle sets laid flat, furniture hardware. A long box has a wide-open top and bottom, and an RSC seam on that span can sag under a stack. Lapping the flaps stiffens the closure without paying for a full overlap that covers every inch of the panel.

It is not always the answer. For light, roughly square items an RSC is cheaper and perfectly adequate. For heavy or crushable freight, step up to a full overlap or a heavier wall. And if the box is also the first thing your customer sees, a slotted carton is the wrong format; look at a die-cut mailer instead, which opens cleanly and prints better.

How to measure for a POL box

Give us inside dimensions in the order length, width, height. Length is the longer side of the opening, width is the shorter, and height is the depth from the top flaps to the bottom. Measure the product at its widest points, then add a little room for board thickness and any padding. A box cut too tight bulges at the walls and loses compression strength; one cut too loose lets the product slide and shifts the load. If you are adding inserts or foam, tell us and we size around them.
