A dieline is the flat, two dimensional template that shows exactly where a box is cut, folded, and glued before it is assembled. It is the blueprint your printed artwork sits on, so a correct dieline is what keeps every panel, flap, and line of text lined up on the finished, folded box.

The parts of a dieline

A dieline uses a few standard marks. Cut lines show where the material is trimmed. Crease or fold lines show where it bends. The bleed is the area where color extends past the trim so no white edges show after cutting. The safe zone is the inner margin that keeps important text away from folds and edges.

Why the dieline matters

Artwork designed without the right dieline is the most common reason a printed box comes out misaligned, with a logo landing on a fold or text running off an edge. Placing your design onto the correct dieline first is what prevents that, and it is why proofs are built on the dieline, not on a flat rectangle.

How to get a dieline

You do not need to build one yourself. When you request a quote we supply the correct dieline for your box style and size, then send a proof on that template before anything goes to print. Start with our custom retail packaging or rigid boxes and we will handle the dieline as part of your free proof.

More packaging explainers: rigid boxes, corrugated cardboard, kraft paper, mylar bags.
