The word comes from the German for strength, and it describes how the pulp is made rather than what it looks like. The kraft process breaks wood down chemically and leaves the fibers long and intact, which is why kraft board tears and folds better than board made from mechanically ground pulp. The familiar brown is simply what unbleached fiber looks like when nobody has taken the lignin out.
That matters commercially for one reason: when you bleach kraft to make it white, you take some strength with it. White kraft is not brown kraft in a different color. It is the same board with a step added that costs it a little of the property you were buying kraft for in the first place.
Most brands pick kraft because it reads as natural and recyclable. Then, quite reasonably, they want it to survive contact with the real world, so a gloss laminate goes on to stop it marking. That laminate is what turns a straightforwardly recyclable fiber box into a mixed-material item that many programs will not take.
If the recycling story is the reason you are here, protect the box a different way: a water-based coating, a matte varnish, or a design that accepts some visible wear as part of the look. If you need the laminate, that is a legitimate choice — just do not print a recycling claim next to it.
Unbleached kraft is a natural material and its shade shifts with the pulp batch. Two runs six months apart can sit noticeably different next to each other, and no press adjustment fixes it because the variation is in the substrate rather than the ink.
Plan for it. Do not build a brand standard around an exact kraft shade, keep a retained sample from the approved run so any drift is measured against something real, and if you need absolute consistency across years, print the background color onto white board rather than relying on the board to be the color.
Grease, water spots, fingerprints and scuffs all read more clearly on brown than on white or on a coated surface. For a bakery or a bar of soap that is often part of the charm. For a premium product handled repeatedly in a store, it is a slow erosion of how the packaging looks by the time somebody buys it.
Printing has the same honesty problem in reverse: kraft is a mid-brown printing ground, so pale colors go muted and pastels disappear.
