A kraft cupcake box is a paperboard carton with a die-cut insert that keeps each cupcake upright and apart from its neighbours. TBPB makes them to your exact cupcake size with no minimum order, and we beat any written quote you bring for the same specs.
The insert does the real work
Most cupcake damage happens in the car, not on the shelf. A box that is tall enough but has no insert lets the cakes slide on the first corner. The insert is a slotted layer of board with a hole for each cupcake base, and it should grip the paper liner, not the cake. Cut the holes slightly smaller than the liner and the cakes lock in place; cut them loose and you are back to sliding.
The lid is the other half of the problem. Piped swirls can add two or three inches above the liner, so the inside height has to clear the tallest topping with room to spare. A box that looks right empty will crush a tall swirl once the lid closes. If you do a mix of flat-iced and piped cupcakes, size for the piped ones.
Getting the size right
Measure the widest point of the cupcake liner, then the total height from the base to the top of the frosting. The cavity should be about 1/8 inch wider than the liner so the cake drops in without scraping the paper. Send us those two numbers and the count per box, and we work out the box footprint, insert layout and lid height from there.
Mini cupcakes, standard cupcakes and jumbo cupcakes each need a different cavity, so one stock box rarely fits all three. That is one of the better reasons to go custom. A single-cupcake box for a gift or a wedding favour is a very different carton from a half-dozen carrier, and both can be made here.
Kraft board, and what to print on it
Kraft paperboard has a brown, fibrous look that reads handmade, which is exactly why bakers choose it. The trade-off is that colour printing on brown stock looks muted. Dark inks, a one or two colour logo and black or white-ink style graphics hold up well. Full-colour photography does not, and if your brand relies on bright pastels, a white coated board will show them more accurately.
A window die-cut, covered with clear film, lets customers see the product without opening the lid. Windows are popular on cupcake boxes, though they leave a weak spot, so a larger box may need slightly heavier board. Food contact is your responsibility to confirm: grease from buttercream can mark kraft board, so many bakers use paper liners and ask their own regulatory adviser what a given board needs. TBPB prints the artwork you supply.
- Formats: single, two, four, six and twelve cupcake layouts, plus mini and jumbo cavities
- Board: kraft paperboard for the carton, with a matching board insert
- Options: clear window, handle, tuck or hinged lid, one or full-colour print
- Finishes: matte or gloss aqueous coating, depending on the print
When a different box makes more sense
If your cakes are muffin-style with low tops, a plainer muffin box is simpler and cheaper to run. For seasonal runs, a themed carton such as our Halloween cupcake boxes does the same job with festive artwork. Bakers who also sell whole cakes can look at our cake boxes, and the full range sits in the bakery boxes category.

Frequently asked questions
Do you have a minimum order for kraft cupcake boxes?
No. There is no minimum order. You can order one box or ten thousand, and each run is cut and printed to the size you send us.
How do I know what size cupcake box I need?
Measure the widest point of the liner and the full height including frosting, then add about 1/8 inch of clearance around each cupcake. Give us the count per box and we build the insert and lid height from those measurements.
Can the box keep tall frosting from touching the lid?
Yes, if the inside height is planned for it. Piped swirls need more clearance than flat icing, so tell us the tallest cupcake you sell and we size the lid for that one.
Is kraft board safe for frosted cupcakes?
Kraft board is widely used for baked goods, but grease can mark it, and food-contact suitability is something you confirm with your own regulatory adviser. Most bakers use paper liners. TBPB prints the artwork you supply.
Can I add a window to a kraft cupcake box?
Yes. A die-cut window with clear film shows the cupcakes without opening the lid. Windows reduce rigidity a little, so larger boxes sometimes call for heavier board.
How do I get a price for custom cupcake boxes?
Send the cupcake size, count per box and quantity. We draw the dieline and quote it, and if you have a written quote for the same specs elsewhere, we will beat it.
