Soap is a fussier product than it looks
A bar of handmade or cold-process soap sweats, shrinks and sometimes bleeds oil, especially in the first weeks of cure and in humid air. Plain paperboard can show those oil marks, and a damp bar can warp a thin box. So the first question we ask is whether the bar is fully cured and wrapped, or going straight into the carton. A paper wrap or a coated board protects the carton, and a window shows the soap without exposing it to fingers.
Humidity matters at the other end of the journey as well. A bathroom shelf is not kind to paper, and a customer who keeps the soap in its box will see the bar soften. If your bars are meant to stay in the carton, tell us, and we will talk through a coated board or a sleeve that lets air reach the bar. For wholesale orders shipped by the dozen, pack the cartons inside a sturdy outer shipper so the corners survive transit.
Carton, sleeve or window box
A full tuck-top or tuck-end carton encloses the bar and gives you the most print area for ingredients and branding. A sleeve wraps around the middle and leaves the ends open, so the customer sees and smells the bar, which makes it popular for artisan soaps. A window box shows the bar through a film cut-out. Measuring your bar
Measure the length, width and height of the cured bar, not the wet mold. Hand-cut bars vary by a few millimeters from one to the next, so use the largest bar in the batch. Add about an eighth of an inch of clearance per side for a folding carton so the bar slides in without catching. A bar that is slightly loose is easier to pack than one that has to be forced, and a loose fit is easy to fix with a paper wrap.
Board and print
Kraft board gives a natural, earthy look and prints best with one or two ink colors. White-coated paperboard handles full CMYK or Pantone-matched colors and takes matte coating, soft-touch lamination or foil stamping on a logo. Folding carton board in the 16 to 24 pt range suits a standard bar. A kraft soap box is the usual starting point if you want a plain, honest look.
