How molded pulp works
Pulp packaging is made by pulling a slurry of recycled paper fiber onto a mold with vacuum, then drying it into a rigid shape. The mold is the expensive, slow part. Once it exists, each additional tray is cheap and consistent, which is why pulp suits repeat runs and gets awkward for one-off prototypes.
Thick-wall pulp is the rougher, egg-carton look with deep walls, good for heavy items and end caps. Transfer-molded pulp has thinner walls and a smoother surface, which is what you want when a product has to sit in the tray without rattling.
What it is good for
Electronics, bottles, jars, candles and subscription kits are the usual fits. Anything with a defined shape that you want held still does well. For glass or heavy items, pulp end caps inside one of our corrugated boxes give cushioning without foam or plastic.
It is a poor fit for liquids, for products that stay in a wet supply chain, and for a glossy luxury story, since pulp reads natural and recycled. For a polished presentation look, a custom packaging insert in another material is usually the better call.
How to size a pulp tray
Send the product itself or a precise drawing: length, width and height to the millimeter, plus anything that sticks out, like a cap or handle. The cavity is cut slightly larger than the product so it drops in and lifts out without force. Tell us the outer carton too, since the tray must fit it with a little clearance. What to ask before you commit
Because the mold is a fixed cost, ask what the tooling costs, how many units the mold is expected to last, and the schedule from approval to delivery. We answer all three in the quote, and you review a sample from the mold before a full run.
