What kraft actually is

The kraft process is a chemical pulping method that separates cellulose fibers from lignin using an alkaline solution. It leaves fibers longer and less damaged than mechanical pulping does, which is why kraft paper has notably high tear and burst strength for its weight.

Unbleached kraft keeps residual lignin, and lignin is brown. So the color and the strength come from the same place. Bleaching kraft pulp produces white board that is still strong but costs more and loses a little of that toughness.

Practically, that means kraft gives you strength per unit of cost that bleached board does not, and it gives you a surface that is porous, slightly rough and brown. Everything below follows from those three properties.

Printing on kraft, honestly

This is where most kraft projects disappoint, and it is entirely predictable.

Ink is transparent. Printed on white board, cyan looks like cyan because the white beneath reflects light back through it. Printed on brown board, the same cyan sits over brown and reads as a dull olive. Light tones and pastels effectively disappear. Yellows go muddy. Anything relying on tonal subtlety does not survive.

There are three workable answers.

Design for the brown. One or two dark colors, strong line work, confident typography, and the kraft itself as the background. This is the approach that looks best and costs least, and it is why so much good kraft packaging is minimal. It is a design decision, not a compromise.

Print a white underbase. We lay down solid white ink first, then print your colors over it. Color comes back accurately in those areas, and you keep bare kraft everywhere else. It adds a print pass and therefore cost, but it is the right answer when brand color is non negotiable.

Use white kraft. The outer liner is bleached white while the rest of the structure stays kraft. You get accurate color and photographic print with kraft strength and a kraft interior. It costs more than natural kraft and less than fully bleached board.

Anything depending on photographic imagery, unless you go to white kraft. Anything with a pastel or light brand palette, for the same reason. Prestige beauty and fine fragrance, where the category’s visual language expects a smooth coated or textured white surface. And anywhere the brown itself conflicts with the product, which most often happens with clinical, medical and technical goods where customers read brown as informal.

Kraft is also less consistent than bleached board. Shade varies between mill runs, and a reorder six months later can be visibly different from the first run. If exact color match across reorders matters to you, that is a real argument for white board.

Recyclability and claims

Kraft board is widely recyclable in curbside programs and is straightforward to specify with recycled content, which is a genuine advantage. Two things undermine it. Film lamination makes separation harder, so use an aqueous coating or leave the board uncoated if recyclability is a claim you want to make. And metallized foil has the same effect.

Kraft’s look invites environmental claims, which is exactly why the claim needs to be true. Brown board is not automatically recycled, compostable or sustainable. It is recyclable, it can carry recycled content, and it can be FSC certified, and each of those is verifiable.
