The handle is the whole point
With a standard gable box, the peak is a lid you also happen to grab. With a handle gable, the peak is designed as a grip: the panels are cut so the handle stands taller and the tab locks more firmly. That shifts the focus from looks to load. The box is only as good as the board around the handle and the tab that holds it shut, so the first thing we ask is how heavy the filled box will be.
Where handle gable boxes work well
They suit lunch boxes, takeout meals, bakery goods, party favors, kids’ activity packs and small gift sets. For restaurants, the handle means a customer can carry a meal in one hand while holding a drink in the other. For events, it means a guest can walk away with a gift without a bag. They are a poor fit for loose liquids, very heavy contents, or anything you plan to stack tall for display, since the peaked top does not stack flat. For a closed retail carton that sits on a shelf, a hang tab box or tuck top is a better fit.
Sizing and strength
Measure the contents including any wrapper, then leave about an eighth of an inch of clearance per side, plus room above for the roof panels to fold. Folding carton paperboard in the 16 to 24 pt range is typical. A heavier board strengthens the handle, and an extra layer or a reinforced tab helps with heavier meals. If the contents will be hot or steamy, tell us, because moisture softens paperboard and weakens a handle faster than weight alone does.
The handle has to suit a hand as well as a load. A peak that is too short to get fingers under will be awkward even when the box is strong. We can adjust the peak height so an adult hand fits comfortably, and a sample you hold yourself is the quickest way to judge it. Restaurants should test with the full meal, the drink bag and the utensils the customer really receives.
Print, window and food use
The peaked panels give you a lot of print area, including the roof faces that customers see at eye level when the box is carried. We print CMYK or Pantone, with matte or gloss coating, and add a window in a side panel if the product sells on sight. A grease-resistant coating or liner is worth discussing for fried or oily food. Whether a particular board or coating is suitable for direct food contact is something to confirm with your own regulatory adviser, and you are responsible for labeling the artwork you supply.
