A gable bag with an auto bottom is a paperboard carry-out bag with a folded gable top and a base that snaps square the moment you open it. TBPB prints them custom with no minimum order, and if you bring a written quote for the same specs, our price-beat guarantee means we beat it.

Why the auto bottom matters

The base is the reason to pick this style over a plain gable box. An auto bottom, also called a crash-lock bottom, has its flaps glued at the factory, so the bag arrives flat and locks into a rectangular footing when you push the sides apart. Nobody folds four flaps or reaches for tape. For a counter team packing orders through a lunch rush, that saves a few seconds per bag, and those seconds add up across a shift. Flat storage helps too, since a case of unopened bags takes far less shelf space than a case of assembled boxes.

The limit is worth knowing. A crash-lock base is built to be filled from the top and carried by the handle. It is not meant to take a single heavy point load, so spread dense items across the floor of the bag instead of stacking them in one corner.

What it carries and what it should not

The gable top folds into a roof shape with a handle formed from the board itself, so the bag closes without a separate lid. That suits boxed meals, bakery assortments, prepared-food kits, retail gift sets and other light to medium loads. Wet food is where people get caught. Paperboard will not stop a leaking container, so loose sauces and soups belong in their own sealed cups or tubs inside the bag. Grease from fried food will eventually mark uncoated kraft as well. If your menu runs oily, tell us and we will talk through a coating or an inner wrap. Food-contact requirements are your call: confirm them with your own regulatory adviser, and we print the artwork you supply.

Sizing and board

Measure the tallest, widest and deepest thing that will go inside, then add about 1/8 inch of clearance per side. Height needs extra attention on a gable bag, because the top folds inward and eats into usable space, so allow room above the contents for the fold. Board is typically folding carton paperboard in the 16 to 24 pt range, either natural kraft or white SBS. Lighter board keeps the bag flat and inexpensive to ship, while heavier board resists a sagging handle. If the load is heavy or the contents are glass, a corrugated style is the safer pick and we can point you to one.

Print and finish

White board takes full-color CMYK or Pantone-matched artwork cleanly. Kraft is a different animal: the brown shows through the ink, so light colors print darker and one or two bold spot colors usually look better than a photo. Aqueous coating gives a light scuff guard, matte lamination adds a softer feel, and spot UV or foil stamping can pick out a logo on white stock. Because every panel is a printable surface, the sides and the gable roof can carry your name, a menu, or a social handle.

  • Auto (crash-lock) base, pre-glued and shipped flat
  • Gable top with a built-in carry handle
  • Natural kraft or white paperboard, printed on all panels
  • Custom width, depth and height to your product
  • CMYK, Pantone match, aqueous coating, matte lamination, spot UV, foil

If you already pack into a standard bag, you can compare it with our food gable bag, or look at a taller handle gable box when the load is bulky. A flat-sided option is also available as kraft bags, and the full range sits in the custom gable boxes category.

Next step: send us your product dimensions and the quantity you need, even if it is one bag. We draw the dieline and quote it.

Frequently asked questions

  1. What is a gable bag with an auto bottom?

It is a paperboard bag with a gable-shaped top and a handle made from the same board. The base is pre-glued, so it pops open into a square, locked footing without tape. It ships flat, fills from the top, and is carried by the handle.

  2. Is there a minimum order for custom gable bags?

No. TBPB has no minimum order, so you can order one bag to test fit and print or ten thousand for a full rollout. You send dimensions and artwork, we draw the dieline, and the quote reflects the quantity you actually need.

  3. How much weight can an auto bottom gable bag hold?

It depends on board thickness, bag size and how the load sits. Light to medium items like boxed meals and bakery sets suit it well. For heavy or glass items, ask for thicker board or choose a corrugated style. We recommend testing a sample before a full run.

  4. Can I use a gable bag for hot or greasy food?

Pack hot or oily food in its own sealed container first. Paperboard on its own can soften and stain. Tell us what you are packing and we can discuss coatings or liners. Food-contact rules are yours to confirm with a regulatory adviser.

  5. How do I choose the right size?

Measure the largest item, add about 1/8 inch of clearance per side, and leave extra height for the folded gable top. If several items go in together, measure them as they will actually sit. Send the numbers and we will check the dieline fits.

  6. Can the bag be printed on every side?

Yes. Each panel, including the base flaps and the gable roof, can carry print. White board suits full-color artwork, while kraft works best with one or two bold colors. We can print supplied artwork in CMYK or matched Pantone colors.

Product Overview

This is a pre-glued carry-out bag with a gable top, a handle cut from the same board and an auto (crash-lock) base that opens square in one push. Buyers choose it because staff fill it faster than a taped box, it ships flat to save storage, and every panel is a printable surface for a menu, logo or social handle. TBPB makes it to your dimensions in kraft or white paperboard, with no minimum order.

Start with the contents. Measure the biggest item, add about 1/8 inch of clearance per side, and allow extra height for the folded gable roof. Pick kraft board if you want a natural look and one or two bold ink colors, or white board when a photo or light color has to print true. Heavier board suits heavier loads and keeps the handle from sagging. If you carry greasy or wet food, ask about coatings and pack liquids in sealed cups. Not sure which fits? Send the dimensions and we will advise.
