Shipping and Turnaround

Standard production runs 7 to 14 business days, depending on the box style, print method, and finishing you choose, a simple kraft mailer moves faster than a box with foil stamping or spot UV. Need it sooner? We handle rush requests case by case, so email us your deadline before you place the order and we’ll tell you straight whether we can hit it.

Shipping is free on every order, in the United States and internationally. We ship with FedEx, UPS, USPS or DHL depending on your location and order size, and you’ll get a tracking number as soon as your order leaves our facility.

A food gable box is a folding carton with a peaked top that locks into a built-in carry handle, used for takeout meals, bakery treats and grab-and-go lunches. TBPB prints custom gable boxes with no minimum order, and we beat a written quote for the same specs.

How the gable top works

The box ships flat, then pops open into a rectangular body. Two panels at the top fold inward and lock into each other at the peak, making the handle. Because the handle is part of the box, there are no staples, strings or plastic grips to add, and the whole thing folds back to flat for storage in a drawer or under a counter. The weak point is the handle area, which is why board weight matters: a box that carries a full meal needs a stiffer paperboard than one that carries a cupcake.

What it carries best

Gable boxes suit burgers and wraps, fried chicken pieces, sandwiches, kids’ meals, picnic packs, cookies and pastries. They are less suited to soupy dishes unless the contents are sealed in their own tub. Grease moves through bare paperboard sooner than most owners expect, so a liner, a greaseproof wrap, or a contents wrap such as foil or paper is a good habit for fried food.

Sizing the box to the portion

Measure the food in its container, or the stack of items, at the widest point in each direction. Add about 1/8 to 1/4 inch of clearance per side, since a fully loaded gable box is a bit deformable. Then check the height under the peak: the handle should sit at a comfortable height without crushing the top of the food. Send us the portion size or a sample container and we draw the dieline from it.

Board, print and finish

  • Folding carton paperboard, commonly 16 to 24 pt, with the heavier end suited to full meals.
  • Kraft board for a natural café look, white board for bright color printing.
  • CMYK or Pantone-matched printing on the exterior; interior printing is available if you want it.
  • Matte or gloss aqueous coating on the outside.
  • Optional window cutout with film where the meal is meant to show.
  • Reinforced handle zone and extra score lines on request.

Branding the handle side and the front

A gable box is seen from three angles: carried by the handle, stacked on a counter, and opened on a lap. Put the logo on the large front panel where it reads when the box is held, and use the end panels for a short line or a social handle. The handle panels are narrow, so they work best as a pattern or a single color band. Keep type away from the score lines and the lock tabs, because the folds distort text, and tell us if the box will be stacked so we can place key artwork on the visible faces.

Food contact is your call

TBPB builds the box and prints the artwork you supply. We do not certify food-contact suitability, and rules on coatings, inks and labeling depend on the food and the jurisdiction. If the food touches the board, confirm material requirements with your regulatory adviser. Ask us about adding an insert or liner when the meal is greasy.

Alternatives worth comparing

If you are shipping bakery items, a window pillow box suits a single treat better than a gable box. For a delivery order that needs more protection, check our ecommerce boxes. The rest of the family sits in the custom gable boxes category.

To start, send the portion dimensions and the quantity, even a single box, and TBPB will draw the dieline and quote it.

Frequently asked questions

  1. What is a food gable box?

A food gable box is a folding paperboard carton with a peaked top that locks into a carry handle. It ships flat, pops open in seconds and is widely used for takeout meals, kids’ boxes, picnic packs and bakery treats.

  2. Is there a minimum order for custom gable boxes?

No. TBPB has no minimum order, so a food truck or a single cafe can order the exact count it needs. You can order one gable box to test the handle and the fit, or thousands for a chain.

  3. How do I size a gable box?

Measure the food or container at its widest point in length, width and height, and add about 1/8 to 1/4 inch of clearance per side. Check the height under the handle so the top of the food is not crushed.

  4. Can a gable box carry a hot, greasy meal?

Yes for typical meals, but bare paperboard lets grease through over time. Wrap the food, use a liner or insert, and confirm material and coating needs with your regulatory adviser, since TBPB does not certify food-contact suitability.

  5. What board thickness is best?

Folding carton paperboard around 16 to 24 pt is common. Use the heavier end for full meals so the handle holds, and the lighter end for a cookie or pastry where the load is small.

  6. Can I add a window?

Yes. A die-cut window with clear film lets customers see the food, which helps with bakery items and kids’ meals. It changes the dieline and stiffness, so mention it up front and we will plan it in.

Stylish and Practical Food Gable Boxes for Takeout and Events

Food gable boxes are the carry-handle cartons you see at lunch counters, bakeries and food trucks. The gabled top locks into a handle, the box folds flat for storage, and it opens fast on a busy line. TBPB prints them on folding paperboard in your colors and portion size, with optional window cutouts, kraft or white board, and matte or gloss coating. No minimum order applies, so a small cafe can order exactly what it needs.

Why Choose Food Gable Boxes for Your Takeout and Catering Needs?

Match the board to the meal. A cookie or a muffin sits happily in 16 pt board, while a full lunch needs something nearer 24 pt so the handle does not give way. Measure the real container, not the menu description, and allow a little extra clearance for loading. If the food is greasy, think about a liner or greaseproof wrap. Choose kraft for a natural look or white board for bright color, and send the portion dimensions for a dieline.
