Why makers choose a sleeve over a full box
A sleeve does three jobs for very little material. It carries the brand name, scent and ingredients. It lets the bar sit visible at both ends so the buyer sees the color, swirl or texture. And it leaves the soap exposed to air, which is useful for cold-process bars that are still curing or that sweat in humid weather, because a sealed box can trap moisture. The tradeoff is protection: a sleeve will not stop a knock to the corners, and it will not keep the bar dust-free in a shop. If your soap goes into a market stall or a boutique shelf, that is usually fine. If it ships loose in a parcel, add an outer carton.
Getting the size right
Measure the finished, cured bar: length, width and height. A sleeve wraps the long way, so the printed panel width is built from the bar width plus its height, doubled, plus a glue flap. We take that math off your hands, but we need accurate bar sizes. Soap shrinks as it cures, and hand-cut bars are rarely identical, so measure several and use the largest. A snug fit is better than a loose one. A loose sleeve slides off in a basket, and a too-tight sleeve scuffs the soap. Allow roughly 1/8 inch of clearance per side as a starting point, and ask for a sample if your bars vary a lot.
Board, print and finish
Most soap sleeves are made from folding carton paperboard, in the range of 16 pt to 24 pt, or from kraft board for a natural look. The thicker board holds its square shape on heavy bars, and lighter stock is easier to wrap and to slide on. Printing is full-color CMYK, or Pantone-matched where your brand color needs to be exact. A matte aqueous coating helps resist the water spots and oil marks that appear around soap, and soft-touch lamination gives a velvety hand. Foil on a logo suits gift-grade bars. Dark colors show oil marks sooner than light ones, so test with a real bar.
