The insert does the real work
A macaron is a thin, brittle shell sandwiching a soft filling. It chips if it touches another macaron, it cracks if the box shifts, and the filling can smear on the lid. A loose pile in a carton is a bad idea. The insert, a die-cut paperboard tray with a round or slightly oval pocket for each cookie, is what keeps shells upright and apart. Kraft inserts and white inserts both work. We size the pockets to your actual macaron diameter, which commonly falls around 1.5 to 2 inches, though bakeries differ and some make mini or oversized versions.
Send us a real macaron, or its exact measurement, before locking the dieline. A pocket 2 mm too small crushes the edge; one too large lets it rattle.
Count, layout and height
Common counts are 3, 6, 12 and 24, and each has a natural layout, such as 2 by 3 for six or a 3 by 4 grid for twelve. Standing macarons on their sides in a row gives a sleek look and a shorter, longer box. Laying them flat in a grid gives a squarer box that is easier to stack. Allow depth for the filling and for a lid that does not touch the top shell. A window in the lid shows the colors, which is what sells macarons, but a very large window weakens the lid.
Why kraft works here, and where it does not
Kraft board gives a warm, artisan feel, and pastel macaron colors look striking against brown. It also suits one- or two-color print: a stamp-style logo or a simple pattern. The trade-off is that brown board mutes color, so full-color photography and bright gradients look dull. Storage and food responsibility
Macarons are sensitive to humidity and to temperature, and a paper box does not seal them. Most are sold chilled or eaten within a short window, so plan how the box will be kept. A greaseproof liner under the insert helps if fillings are buttery. Food-contact suitability and label copy are your responsibility, so confirm them with your own regulatory adviser.
