Food Gable Boxes

A food gable box is a carton with a pitched, roof-shaped top that folds shut and doubles as a carry handle, used for takeaway meals, baked goods and treats. TBPB prints them to your size and artwork with no minimum order, and if you bring a written quote for the same specs, we beat it.

How the gable top works

The two long panels of the lid lean toward each other and lock at the peak, creating a small handle you can grip with two fingers. That is the whole appeal: no separate bag, no string, and the box carries easily from counter to car. The locking tabs hold the top closed without glue, so staff can fold and fill them quickly during a rush. Where the gable top is weaker is in heavy loads, because the handle is cut from the carton board itself. Keep the filled weight modest, and use a heavier board if the contents are dense.

What goes in a gable box and what does not

Gable boxes suit dry or wrapped food: sandwiches, small bakery items, cookies, snack mixes, party favours and fast food portions. They are less suited to anything runny or very oily unless the food is wrapped or sits in an inner container, because bare paperboard will soak through over time. If you sell hot, greasy food, ask us about liners or coatings before printing. Do not assume the box alone will keep a sauce from marking the outside.

Sizing the box around the food

Measure the container, wrapper or item that goes inside, at its longest, widest and tallest points, then add about 1/8 inch per side. Remember the gable top needs head space: the lid rises into a peak, so the box looks deeper than the cavity underneath. If you plan to stack boxes in a delivery bag, check that the peaks sit flat enough to stack. Tell us how many items go in each box and whether they are stacked or side by side and we work out the proportions.

Printing a box people carry in public

A gable box is a walking advertisement. The sloped panels and the sides are all visible while it is carried, so artwork should work on several faces rather than a single front. Full-colour CMYK, Pantone matching, and matte or gloss coatings are available. Bold shapes and a clear logo read well at a distance. Foil is possible but not usually needed on a food carton.
