The steam problem
Waffles go soft for one reason: trapped steam. Seal a hot waffle in a closed box and the crust starts losing its snap almost immediately. Vent holes or a slotted lid let steam escape while the box holds heat. Small die-cut vents on the sides or lid are the usual answer, and where the waffle is served with a dip or syrup cup, a separate compartment keeps liquid off the crust.

Sizing for round, square and Belgian waffles
Measure the waffle’s widest point and its thickness. Belgian waffles run noticeably thicker than classic ones, and toppings add more. Add about 1/8 inch of clearance on each side, then check the lid height against the tallest topping you serve, whipped cream and fruit included. A flat one-piece clamshell takes a single waffle neatly, while a larger tray-style box handles a stack of two or a waffle with sides.
Odd shapes such as waffle cones, hot dog waffles or waffle bowls need a purpose-cut layout. A generic box either rattles or crushes them, which is a good reason for custom sizing.
Board and print
For hot food, kraft or white folding carton board with an aqueous coating is common. Heavier waffles need a sturdier board, since a limp base lets the waffle sag and tear on the way out. Coated white takes bright artwork; kraft takes simple one or two colour logos and looks right for cafes with a rustic brand. Because the box is often handed over a counter and carried in a bag, put the logo on the lid and a short line on the side that faces the customer.

Delivery changes the brief again. A waffle that rides in a bag for twenty minutes needs a firmer box than one carried across a cafe counter, because bags get squeezed and tilted. A locking tab or tuck flap keeps the lid shut either way, and a slightly raised base keeps the waffle off any condensation that collects underneath.
