A toast box is a tall food grade carton built for thick cut toast, brick toast, brioche loaves, milk bread and shokupan: bread that is soft, square and easily squashed, and that is sold by the loaf or the slab rather than the slice. Most of it is 4 to 5 inches tall, so the box is tall and boxy where a bakery box is flat, and it needs a lid that lifts clear rather than presses down. We make them as tuck top cartons, lock corner boxes with windows, and lidded trays, in white, kraft or full color with a grease resistant coating, and with no minimum order. The number that matters is head room: half an inch of clear space above the crust, because a lid that touches soft bread leaves a mark the customer sees.
Brick toast and Japanese milk bread are sold on their shape, a clean square with a golden top, so the box has to protect that shape from the bakery to the table. That means a box the loaf cannot slide in, a lid that never rests on it, and enough board that a stack of boxes on a counter does not crush the bottom one.

Structures
A tuck top carton fully encloses the loaf and prints on all sides; it is the standard for a wrapped loaf sold from a shelf. A one piece lock corner box with a window lid shows the golden top and is the counter and gift choice. A lidded tray with a clear PET lid suits dessert toast with toppings that must not touch the lid at all. For delivery, the tuck top carton in E flute, with a tamper strip.
Board and coating
18 point paperboard for single serves and half loaves; 24 point or E flute corrugated for full loaves and anything stacked, because a 5 inch tall paperboard box bows under the box above it. Every box gets a grease resistant inside coating: butter, honey and condensed milk go through plain board in an hour. Windows are clear film; a few die-cut vent holes in a solid lid let steam out of a loaf that is still warm.
White board with full color for a Japanese or Korean bakery look, kraft with one or two colors for an artisan look. Print the lid and one long side; those are what face the customer on a shelf and in a photo. Add a best before panel and a flavor checklist on the end for staff.

What size box does a shokupan loaf need?
About 5.25 by 5.25 by 5.5 inches inside for a 5 inch square loaf, in 24 point board or E flute, with half an inch of head room so the lid never touches the crust. Half loaves fit 5.25 by 4.25 by 4.5.
Why not use a standard bakery box for toast?
Bakery boxes are flat and wide for cakes and pastries. Toast and milk bread are tall and soft, so a flat box either crushes the loaf or leaves it sliding around. A toast box is sized to the loaf with head room above it and board that holds a stack.
How do you keep a warm loaf from going soggy in the box?
Vent holes in the lid, or an open window, let the steam out. Combined with a grease resistant coating, the box stays dry and the crust stays crisp.
Can the box show the top of the loaf?
Yes. A lock corner box with a clear window lid shows the golden top, and a lidded tray with a clear PET lid shows a topped dessert toast without anything touching it.
