A custom window box is a printed carton with a die-cut opening, usually covered with clear film, so the product is visible without opening the pack. TBPB makes them with no minimum order and a price-beat guarantee: bring a written quote for the same specs and we will beat it.
Window boxes are the most common toy box style. For toy-specific options such as die-cut figure trays, backer cards and collector windows, see custom toy packaging.
How the window is actually made
The window is cut out of the flat sheet during die-cutting, then a patch of clear film is glued behind the opening. The film is typically PET, which stays clear and flat, and some brands ask for a compostable film instead. This is called window patching, and the detail that matters is the glue margin. Too narrow and the film lifts at the corners. Too wide and it intrudes on the opening. We build the dieline with enough margin for a clean bond and keep the cut a safe distance from folds and score lines, where cracking happens.
One practical point: film reflects light. Under bright shop lighting a large glossy patch can bounce glare into the buyer’s eyes, so a matte-finish board around it, or a slightly smaller window, often photographs and displays better than a huge one.
Want a window with no film at all? That is an open cut-out. It looks lighter and recycles more simply, but dust and fingers can reach the product.
Window size and placement
Bigger is not always better. A window that takes up most of the front panel weakens the carton and hides your branding. A good rule is to show the part of the product that sells it, such as the colour of a candle, the texture of a cookie or the face of a toy, and leave enough printed board around the opening for the logo and key details. Shaped windows add personality, whether a circle, an arch or a custom outline, but each curve adds die-cutting complexity, so keep the shape simple unless it is part of the brand.
Pick the carton style behind the window
Window boxes are a feature, not a style, so choose the base first. A tuck top box is the familiar choice for cosmetics and small gifts. Our window pillow boxes suit soft or light items like candy and accessories. For a natural, handmade look, a kraft die-cut box pairs well with a window, because the brown board against a clear opening reads as honest and simple.
- Base styles: tuck top, tuck end, pillow, sleeve, tray and lid
- Window: rectangular, round, arched or custom shape, with PET film or open cut-out
- Board: SBS paperboard, kraft, rigid wrap for gift sets
- Print: CMYK or Pantone, matte or gloss, soft-touch, spot UV, foil
- Quantity: no minimum order
When to skip the window
Products that fade in light, such as some foods, cosmetics with light-sensitive actives and dyed fabrics, can degrade behind a window on a shelf. Fragile items that need full wall support may do better in a solid carton. And if the product itself looks plain, a printed image can sell it better than the real thing. Food and cosmetic labelling is your responsibility, so confirm contact materials and label copy with your own regulatory adviser. For more display formats, see our custom display boxes category.
Shipping matters too. A window is the weakest point of a carton, and parcel handling can dent or puncture the film. If the boxes will travel loose in a courier bag, nest them inside a corrugated shipper so the window arrives clean.
Send the product dimensions, where you want the window and a quantity, even if that is one, and we draw the dieline and quote it.
Frequently asked questions
What is a window box in packaging?
It is a carton with a cut-out opening, usually covered with clear film, that lets buyers see the product without opening the box. It is common for food, cosmetics, toys, candles and gifts where the look of the item helps sell it.
What material is the window film?
Most windows use clear PET film glued behind the die-cut opening. Compostable film options exist if sustainability is part of your brand. An open cut-out with no film is also possible, but the product is then exposed to dust and handling.
How big can the window be?
Large enough to show the product, small enough to keep the carton rigid and leave room for your branding. As a rule, keep the cut away from folds and edges. We check your window against the dieline before artwork is final.
Can I get a custom-shaped window?
Yes. Circles, arches, hearts or brand-shaped windows can be die-cut. Each curve makes the cutting tool more complex, so simple shapes are the safest choice, and we will flag any detail that is likely to tear.
Is there a minimum order for custom window boxes?
No. TBPB has no minimum order, so you can order a single window box to test the product fit and film clarity or thousands for a full retail run. Send dimensions and quantity and we will draw the dieline.
Can I use window boxes for food?
Yes, many food brands do, but you are responsible for food-contact compliance and labelling. Confirm the film, board and any liners with your own regulatory adviser. We print the artwork you supply on the board you choose.
