How a stand-up pouch is made

The pouch is laminated from layers of film. An outer print layer carries your artwork, an inner layer forms the seal, and in many structures a middle layer such as metallised film or foil adds a barrier against light, moisture and oxygen. The bottom gusset opens out when filled so the pouch balances on its base. Most have a press-to-close zipper, and many have a tear notch near the top so the customer can open it cleanly the first time.

Because the barrier depends on the film structure, the right build depends on what is inside. Dry snacks, coffee, tea, granola, pet treats, powders, bath salts, hardware and loose craft items are the usual contents. Liquids need a different design, with a spout, and are better discussed with us before you order.

Choosing between clear, matte and metallised finishes

A window or fully clear pouch lets the customer see the product, which sells granola or candy well. A matte opaque pouch feels premium and hides contents that are sensitive to light. A metallised or foil-lined pouch gives the strongest barrier and also the most reflective look. Gloss finishes make color pop but fingerprint easily, whereas matte hides marks.

If your product is light-sensitive or you need long shelf life, lean toward an opaque, high-barrier structure. If shelf appeal matters most and the product is not fragile in light, a clear window pouch does the selling for you.

Getting the size right

Do not size a pouch by volume alone. Fill a test pouch, or a similar one, with your actual product, then check how much headspace you want above the fill line for the zipper and the heat seal. Powders pack tighter than granola. A pouch that is too large looks half-empty on the shelf; one that is too small can strain the seal and split. Common mistakes before ordering

Three come up again and again. First, people order the artwork before they confirm the fill, then discover the pouch is a size off. Run a fill test with real product first. Second, they push the artwork into the seal zone, where the print gets crushed or hidden. Keep logos and text clear of the top seal, the side seals and the zipper line. Third, they forget the bottom gusset eats into the usable front panel once the pouch stands, so a design that looks centerd flat can look low when full. Ask for a proof and imagine it standing filled, not lying on a table.
