Handle type changes how the bag feels, and how much it carries
Handles do more than decorate. Twisted paper handles are glued inside the top of the bag and are strong enough for most retail goods; they feel natural and suit kraft. Flat paper handles are simpler to make and lie flatter, which suits lighter items. Ribbon or rope handles look more upmarket and are used on gift bags, but the knot or attachment point must be reinforced if the bag carries real weight. A reinforced top fold on the inside is what keeps the handle from tearing the bag open under load, so ask about it for heavier contents.
No paper bag is a replacement for a box on fragile goods. It can carry a boxed product comfortably, but a loose glass bottle in a thin paper bag is a breakage waiting to happen.
Reading a bag size: width, gusset, height
Bag sizes are written as width by gusset by height. The gusset is the side fold that gives the bag its depth. Measure the item you want inside, boxed if it is boxed, then choose a width and gusset a little larger than the item, and a height that lets the top fold over or the product sit lower than the rim. A bag that is exactly the height of the product shows everything poking out, while one that is much taller looks sloppy when half empty. Start by measuring the real product, not a catalogue size.

Kraft paper has a natural tone that prints well in dark inks and suits eco-minded and artisan brands. White paper gives brighter colour and a cleaner canvas for full-colour print. Paper weight is measured in gsm, and heavier paper holds its shape and carries more weight, but it is also stiffer to fold and use.

Storing and handing out bags
Paper reacts to humidity. Bags stored in a damp stockroom go limp, curl at the top and can show tide marks, so keep cartons off the floor and away from external walls. Flat-packed bags stack neatly, but a heavy stack left for months can crease the gusset folds permanently. At the counter, open the bag before the customer reaches for it, place the product in base-first, and let them take it by the handles. It sounds trivial, but a bag handed over properly looks more expensive than the same bag crumpled into a hand.
