Full clear lid or window cutout
These are two different boxes, and the choice shapes the whole pack. A full clear lid, usually clear plastic film or acetate fixed over a printed base, turns the box into a display: the product is visible from above and often from the sides, and the base carries the branding. A solid lid with a die cut window is usually stiffer, and it lets you control how much of the product shows. If your item looks messy in a box, such as loose candy, a smaller window flatters it. If your item is neat and colourful, such as macarons or a candle in a clear jar, a full lid pays off.
What goes inside, and what to avoid
Bakery items, candy, chocolate, soap, cosmetics, small gifts and retail products all suit a clear lid. Think about contact and condensation. A warm pastry in a sealed clear lid fogs the plastic and can soften the food. Oily products can mark uncoated board. For food, use a lining such as a parchment liner, and confirm contact requirements with your own regulatory adviser, because TBPB prints your artwork and does not certify any packaging as food-safe. Fragile items need an insert so they do not slide against the lid.
Sizing and board
Measure the product at its longest, widest and tallest, and add about 1/8 inch of clearance per side. With a clear lid, remember that the product presses toward the lid, so leave a gap for stacked or tall items. The base is usually folding carton paperboard at about 16 to 24 pt, with kraft board for natural brands and corrugated for heavier goods or shipping. Print can be full colour CMYK or Pantone matched, with matte or gloss aqueous coating, soft-touch lamination, foil stamping and embossing on the base or lid frame.
Because the product is visible, the interior colour matters. A printed or coloured base gives contrast and makes a pale product easier to see.
A final point on photography. Clear lid boxes are shot constantly for online listings, and glare off the film is the usual complaint. A matte or anti-glare film, or a window cutout with no film at all, photographs more cleanly under shop lights. If you sell online more than in store, ask us for a sample and photograph it before you order the full run. A thirty second test on your own table shows problems that a drawing never will, and it is easier to change a dieline than a pallet of finished boxes.
