Custom food grade paper is printed paper that touches food directly: greaseproof sheets for wrapping burgers and sandwiches, wax and tissue for deli and bakery counters, basket and tray liners, and butter and pastry wraps. It is made from paper approved for direct food contact, printed with food safe inks, and cut to sheets or wound on rolls, in any size and with no minimum order. The number that matters is grease resistance, rated on a kit test from 1 to 12: a deli tissue at kit 3 to 5 handles a dry sandwich, a burger wrap needs kit 7 to 9, and fried chicken or a buttered pastry wants kit 10 to 12 or a wax coating.
For a restaurant, a bakery or a food brand this is the most seen piece of branding there is. Every order is opened on the paper, photographed on the paper, and eaten off the paper. It is also the lowest cost surface to print, which is why chains print it and independents should.
Paper types and what they do
| Paper | Weight | Grease resistance | Used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Greaseproof (parchment style) | 30 to 40 lb (40 to 60 gsm) | kit 7 to 12, no coating | burger and sandwich wraps, basket liners, tray liners |
| Waxed paper | 25 to 35 lb plus wax | wax barrier, moisture and grease | deli sheets, butter wrap, sticky bakery items |
| Dry wax tissue | 18 to 25 lb | light, kit 3 to 5 | deli pickup sheets, bakery tissue, pastry interleaving |
| Kraft food paper | 30 to 50 lb | kit 3 to 6, or coated to 9 | wraps, liners, butcher style, natural look |
| Foil laminated paper | paper plus foil | full barrier, holds heat | hot wraps, burritos, foil lined burger wraps |
Sizes
Wraps are cut square or rectangular; liners are cut to the tray or basket. Rolls are for wrapping stations and dispensers.
| Item | Sheet size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Burger or sandwich wrap | 12 x 12 in, or 14 x 14 for large | the fold needs 3 in of overlap on each side |
| Deli or pickup sheet | 10 x 10.75 in, or 12 x 12 | interfolded for a dispenser box |
| Basket liner | 12 x 12 or 12 x 16 in | sized to the basket with 2 in of overhang |
| Tray liner | 10 x 14 or 12 x 18 in | sized to the tray |
| Butter and pastry wrap | 8 x 10 to 12 x 12 in | waxed or greaseproof |
| Roll | 12, 15 or 18 in wide, 1,000 ft | for wrapping stations and dispensers |
One or two colors on kraft or white is the standard food paper print, with the logo repeated in a step pattern so it reads however the sheet is folded. Full color is available for photographic or color heavy brands. All inks are food safe and printed on the side away from the food where the paper is single sided; greaseproof and tissue print on one side by design. Print coverage is kept under about 30 percent of the sheet on direct contact papers so the paper keeps breathing.
Ordering
Sheets ship in cases of 1,000 to 5,000; rolls by the case of 2 to 6. Because there is no minimum order, a single restaurant can print its own wrap without a chain’s volume, and a seasonal or event design can run on its own. Reorders run from the approved file.
In short
What to send us: what the paper wraps or lines, how greasy or hot it is, the sheet or roll size you use now, and the logo. What you get back: a paper type and kit rating for the food, a sheet size that folds or fits, a step and repeat print layout, and samples to wrap a real order in. What it costs you to start: nothing. Free design, free samples, no minimum order.
Food grade paper questions
What is food grade paper?
Paper approved for direct contact with food, printed with food safe inks. The main types are greaseproof for wraps and liners, waxed paper for moisture and sticky items, dry wax tissue for deli and bakery, kraft food paper for a natural look, and foil laminated paper for hot wraps.
What paper is best for wrapping burgers?
Greaseproof at kit 7 to 9, in a 12 by 12 inch sheet, or foil laminated paper if the wrap needs to hold heat. A 12 by 12 sheet gives the 3 inches of overlap each side that a burger fold needs.
What does the kit rating mean?
A grease resistance scale from 1 to 12. Kit 3 to 5 handles dry sandwiches and pastries, 7 to 9 handles burgers and fries, 10 to 12 handles fried chicken and buttered items. We pick the rating from the food you tell us.
Can food paper be printed in full color?
Yes, with food safe inks, though one or two colors in a step and repeat pattern is the standard and the lowest cost. On direct contact papers print coverage stays under about 30 percent of the sheet.
Is there a minimum order?
No. A single case for one restaurant or a pallet for a chain. Free design, free samples to wrap a real order, and a proof before the run.
No minimum order. One or a full run. Free design and dieline, and a printed proof before production. Free samples so you can wrap a real order in a sample before you commit. Price match: send a written quote for the same size, board, print and quantity and we will beat it.
