A four corner gift box is a one-piece folding tray: a flat base with a flap at each corner that folds up and locks or glues into square walls, so it ships flat and sets up in seconds. TBPB prints and builds them to your size with no minimum order, and if you bring a written quote for the same specs, we beat it.
How the corners hold the walls up
The strength comes from the corner construction, not from thick board. Each flap is scored, folded against the wall and either glued at the factory or secured with a locking tab at assembly. Glued corners arrive nearly ready and suit a packing table where hundreds go out a day. Locking corners ship completely flat, which matters when storage space is tight, but they cost a few extra seconds per box.
The tray is open on top, so it does not close by itself. You choose what goes over it: a telescoping lid, a display lid, a sleeve, or nothing at all except clear film or a ribbon. That one decision changes the look of the whole box more than any other.
Where these trays earn their place
Four corner boxes show up wherever the contents should be seen the moment the lid comes off: cookie and pastry assortments, candle and bath gift sets, hamper trays, subscription kits and sample collections. The straight walls keep items from sliding, and the clean inside panels give you room to print a message, a pattern or a packing guide.
Board choices and what they carry
Most four corner boxes are cut from folding-carton paperboard or from thin corrugated. Paperboard in the 16 to 24 pt range prints sharply and suits light sets, candles and confectionery. E-flute corrugated is the better call when the contents are heavy, like jars and bottles, or when trays will be stacked in a warehouse. Kraft board gives an unbleached, natural look. White board gives the cleanest base for colour.
Sizing the tray
Measure the product or the whole gift set laid out as it will sit, then add about 1/8 inch of clearance per side for a snug fit. Depth is where most people go wrong. The walls need to rise high enough to hold the contents if the box is tilted, but if a lid will sit over the tray, there must be room for it to slide on without catching. Give us the stack height and tell us whether the lid goes over or inside.
Print and finishing
Full-colour CMYK can cover the base and all four walls, inside and out. Pantone matching is available for brand colours that cannot drift. Matte or gloss aqueous coating guards against fingerprints, and soft-touch lamination feels better in the hand but can scuff on dark kraft. Foil stamping and spot UV work best on the lid, since that is the face people see first.

When a different box is the better call
If the gift has to travel loose through the mail, an open tray leaves it exposed and a corrugated mailer box is the sounder choice. If you want a stiffer wall and a heavier feel for high-value items, look at chipboard boxes. For gifts sent to staff or clients in volume, our corporate gift boxes cover the lidded versions, and the full custom retail packaging range has other formats.
Send the dimensions of what goes inside and the quantity, even if it is one box, and TBPB will draw the dieline and quote it.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a minimum order for custom four corner gift boxes?
No. There is no minimum order, so you can order a single box as a sample or ten thousand for a launch. The dieline and print setup are built around your quantity, and the price-beat guarantee applies at any volume.
What is the difference between a four corner box and a regular folding carton?
A folding carton closes on its own with tuck flaps or a lid panel. A four corner box is an open tray whose corner flaps form the walls, so it needs a lid, sleeve or film to close. That makes it better for presenting contents than for protecting them.
Can a four corner box hold heavy items?
Within limits set by the board. Paperboard trays suit light gift sets and confectionery. For jars, bottles or stacked contents, ask for E-flute corrugated, which gives much stiffer walls. Tell us the weight of the contents and we will recommend the board.
Are glued or locking corners better?
Glued corners arrive pre-formed and pack faster, but they take more shipping and storage space. Locking corners ship fully flat and store compactly, with a few seconds of assembly per box. Choose glued for busy packing tables and locking when space is limited.
Can I print on the inside of the box?
Yes. Full-colour CMYK can run on the outside, the inside or both, so the walls and base can carry a pattern, a message or a packing guide. Mention inside printing when you request the quote so it is included from the start.
Can food go in a four corner box?
Four corner trays are common for baked goods, but TBPB prints the artwork you supply and does not certify food contact. Confirm contact requirements with your own regulatory adviser, and use a liner or inner wrap for unwrapped food.
