Mug Boxes

Mug boxes are custom cartons built to hold a ceramic or enamel mug upright or on its side, with enough support to stop the handle and rim from taking the hit. TBPB prints them to your mug dimensions with no minimum order, and if you bring a written quote for the same specs we will beat it.

The handle is the problem

Most mug damage happens at the handle joint and the rim. A plain carton with a mug rattling inside it will lose both eventually. The fix is not thicker board; it is stopping movement. A die-cut paperboard or corrugated insert that cradles the body and gives the handle its own pocket does the job, and a custom foam insert goes a step further for heavier stoneware or gift mugs that will travel by courier.

Pick the style by how it is sold

For shelf and gift-shop sales, a printed folding carton with a tuck or lock bottom is the usual choice. It ships flat, assembles in seconds and prints sharply on paperboard. A window cut-out lets buyers see the design, which matters if the mug itself is the selling point. For direct-to-customer shipping, a corrugated mailer with an insert holds up better, since paperboard alone is not made for parcel handling. Gifting is a different job again. A rigid box with a fitted tray makes sense for corporate mug sets, wedding favours and promotional kits, and our corporate gift boxes cover that format. It looks the part, though it takes more room to store and ship than a flat-packed carton.

Sizing a mug box

Measure the mug at its widest point, which is usually the handle side, plus height. A standard 11 oz mug is typically around 3.75 inches tall, but handle projection and taper vary a lot, so do not trust the ounce number. Add about 1/8 inch per side for a snug paperboard fit, more if you are adding an insert or tissue. Send the mug if you can; we will measure it and cut a sample.

Board and print

Paperboard in the 18 to 24 point range suits lightweight retail cartons. For parcel shipping use E-flute or B-flute corrugated. Both take CMYK printing, Pantone colour matching, and coatings like matte aqueous or soft-touch lamination. Foil stamping and spot UV on the logo suit gift lines. Kraft board feels natural for craft or coffee-shop brands but prints duller colour.

One honest warning: do not rely on a thin carton to protect a mug that ships unpackaged inside a larger carton. If the mug travels inside an outer shipper, the mug box mostly handles presentation, and the outer box does the protecting.

Sets, pairs and odd shapes

Two mugs in one box is a common request, and it is trickier than it sounds. The mugs must not touch, so the insert needs a divider between them, and the box grows in width rather than height. Travel mugs, tall latte glasses and mugs with wide handles each need their own dieline, which is why we ask for a sample or exact measurements instead of a catalogue size. A dieline cut to the real item saves you from a loose fit.
