A blind box is a sealed package that hides which item is inside until you open it. Each box in a series looks the same from the outside, so buying one is a small gamble: you know the lineup, but not which figure you will get. Most series have 6 to 12 regular designs plus one or two rare "secret" or "chase" figures, and stores sell them from a counter display that holds a set number of boxes.
Blind boxes in one minute
- What is inside: one figure, plush, squishy or keychain from a published lineup, usually in a sealed foil-lined or printed bag.
- Regular designs: commonly 6 to 12 per series, each packed in roughly equal numbers.
- Secret or chase figure: a rare design packed at stated odds, such as 1 in 96 or 1 in 144 boxes.
- Display box: holds a fixed count of boxes, often one complete set.
- Why people buy: the surprise, the chase for a full set, and trading duplicates with other collectors.
How a blind box series is put together
Behind every blind box is a small piece of planning that most buyers never see. The brand fixes the lineup first. Then it decides how many boxes each counter display will hold, and that number shapes almost everything else.
Say a series has 8 regular figures and a display holds 8 boxes. The packing line puts one of each figure into every display, and a store that sells a whole display has sold one complete set. Collectors know this, which is why some buy a full display at once. If a secret figure is part of the series, it replaces one regular figure in a set number of displays. Odds of 1 in 96 on an 8-box display mean one secret in every 12 displays.
| Series setup | What it means in the store |
|---|---|
| 8 designs, 8 per display | Each display holds one complete set. |
| 12 designs, 12 per display | Each display holds one complete set, larger shelf footprint. |
| 6 designs, 12 per display | Each display holds two of every design. |
| 8 designs, 12 per display | Uneven. Some designs appear twice in a display, others once. |
| Secret at 1 in 96, 8 per display | One secret in every 12 displays. |
What a blind box is made of
- The outer box. A small printed carton, often a cube with tuck flaps, carrying the series name, the lineup and the legal panel. In most series every box has the same art.
- The inner bag. A sealed foil-lined or printed bag around the figure, so it cannot be seen through a gap or easily felt through the board.
- The checklist card. A small card showing every design and the secret odds. Collectors use it to track what they still need.
- A seal. A sticker across the lid or shrink wrap shows the box has not been opened in store.
- The counter display. A printed tray with a header card that sits by the register.
- The master case. A corrugated shipping carton that carries several displays to stores.

Blind box vs mystery box
The two terms overlap. "Blind box" usually means one item from a known lineup, sold at a fixed price, with the full set printed on the box. "Mystery box" is looser. It can mean the same thing, or a bundle of assorted products where the buyer does not know the lineup at all, common in online subscription and clearance sales.
Why brands use blind boxes
The format turns one purchase into many. A collector chasing a full set of 8 rarely stops at 8 boxes because duplicates happen, and the secret pulls people back for months. It also keeps the price low per unit, which makes it an easy impulse buy at the register. For a small brand, it is one of the few toy formats where a counter display in a gift shop or comic store can sell steadily without a big marketing budget.
Squishies, keychains, mini plush and art figures are all sold this way now. Our squishy packaging page covers the squishy version in detail.
Making blind boxes for your brand
If you are planning a series, settle three things before you design anything: how many regular designs, how many boxes per display, and the secret odds. Those numbers decide your print quantities, your display dieline and what you can honestly print on the checklist card. Our free blind box series planner works it out for you, and the blind box template gives you a dieline to design on.
The Best Price Boxes makes the outer boxes, foil-lined and printed inner bags, checklist cards, counter displays and master cases as one kit. U.S. blind boxes also have labeling rules of their own, covered in our toy labeling guide.

Blind box questions
What is a blind box?
A sealed box that hides which item is inside. Every box in a series looks the same, so the buyer knows the lineup but not which design they will get until it is opened.
What is a secret or chase figure?
A rare design packed at stated odds, such as one in every 96 or 144 boxes. It is usually shown as a silhouette on the box.
How many blind boxes make a full set?
At least as many as there are regular designs, but duplicates are common. If a display holds exactly one of each design, buying a whole display gets a full set of the regulars.
Can you tell what is inside a blind box?
A well made blind box is designed so you cannot. The figure sits in a sealed foil-lined or printed bag and every box is packed to feel alike.
What is the difference between a blind box and a blind bag?
A blind bag is the same idea in a sealed foil pouch with no outer box. It costs less to make, but protects the toy less and shows less art.
