The Complete Guide to Custom Candle Boxes

A custom candle box is a printed carton, sleeve, window box or shipping box sized to your jar or tin, and the right choice depends on whether the candle sits on a shelf or travels in the post. Size it to the jar with a small total clearance, add an insert if it ships, and order a single test box first. There is no minimum order.

Which candle box style fits how I sell?

Match the box to the route the candle takes to the customer. A candle sold in a boutique needs to look right at arm’s length and survive being picked up. A candle that goes into a parcel needs to survive a bad week in a delivery van.

How do I size a candle box?

Measure the finished candle the way the customer receives it: jar, lid, any label that wraps beyond the glass, and a wick trimmer if it sits on top. Take the widest point across and the height with the lid on. Then add a small allowance in total, not per side. Our mailer box sizes guide explains the inside versus outside rule that applies to every box we make.

A worked example: a straight-sided jar 3 inches across and 3.5 inches tall with a lid. Add 1/4 inch in total to each dimension and the inside size is 3.25 x 3.25 x 3.75 inches. That leaves 1/8 inch of play on each side of the jar, enough to slide in without forcing the box and not enough to let it knock around. A tapered jar is wider at the top, so measure the top, not the base.

Does a shipped candle really need an insert?

Yes, if it is glass. A jar that can move will chip or crack, and the damage usually shows when a customer opens the parcel. A fitted insert holds the jar by its sides and keeps it off the walls. You can read the options in our custom box inserts guide and see what we offer on custom boxes with inserts.

Tins and pillar candles travel better, but still gain from a snug box. If you cannot afford both a nice print and an insert, spend on the insert. Customers forgive a plain box. They do not forgive a cracked jar.

What should I know about heat, light and storage?

Wax softens when it gets warm, and a hot van or a sunny porch can leave a candle scuffed or its surface changed. A box does not stop that, but a plain, opaque carton protects the surface better than a window does, and it keeps the label from fading. If you sell in warm months, say so in your shipping notes. For your own storage, keep boxes flat in a dry place, because damp board warps and loses its fit.

What should be printed on the box?

Print your brand, scent and burn-time information, and keep warning text where customers will see it. The label and warning copy are your responsibility, not ours. We print the artwork you supply, so check the rules that apply to your product, including any state or marketplace requirements, before the file is final. Keep the key text away from fold lines, and use a color scheme that reads under shop lighting. The candle boxes category shows the styles we offer, and how much custom candle boxes cost explains how to compare quotes.

Kraft board or white board?

Kraft gives a natural, earthy look that suits hand-poured and botanical candles, and a one-color print on it reads as a deliberate choice. White coated board carries full-color artwork and photographic labels more sharply, so it suits brands with a busy or bright design. Neither is stronger by default. Board strength comes from thickness, so ask us to confirm the right weight for your jar. You can see kraft options in the kraft boxes category. If you are unsure, order one of each in a test run and put both next to your candle under shop lighting.

What do I do when the candle is part of a set?

Gift sets change the sums. Two candles, a matchbook and a snuffer need a box sized for the whole stack, and the pieces must be held apart or they will rub. Measure the set packed together, add your clearance once in total, and plan an insert with a cut-out for each piece. A rigid box with a lid suits this better than a tuck-top carton, though it will cost more and take more room to store. A tuck-top carton such as tuck top boxes is better when the set is light and travels in an outer shipper.

Questions buyers ask

Is there a minimum order for custom candle boxes?

No. We make custom candle boxes with no minimum order, so you can order one box to test the fit with your actual jar, then order the full run once it is right. Orders of one or ten thousand are both fine.

What size candle box do I need?

Measure the jar at its widest point and its full height with the lid on, then add about 1/8 to 1/4 inch in total to each dimension. A 3 inch wide, 3.5 inch tall jar needs roughly a 3.25 x 3.25 x 3.75 inch inside size.

What is the best box style for a shipped candle?

A snug shipping or mailer box with a fitted insert, because the jar must not move. A decorative sleeve or tuck-top carton looks good on a shelf but gives little protection on its own in the post.

Do candle boxes need windows?

No, but a window lets shoppers see the color of the wax, which helps in a store. It also exposes the candle to light and scuffs. If your candle is sold online, the window usually matters less than the insert.

Who writes the warning and label text on the box?

You do. Candle labeling rules vary, and the buyer owns the label and warning copy. We print the artwork you supply, so check the rules that apply to your product before the file goes to print.

How do I get a candle box quote and dieline?

Send the jar diameter and height, the style you want and the quantity, even one, through the quote form. We return a dieline and a written quote. Hold a written quote for the same specs and we beat it.
