What actually drives the price of a candle box?
Six choices set the cost, and they do not carry equal weight. Size and structure usually matter most, then quantity, then the decoration.
- Size. A bigger box uses more board and fewer fit on a press sheet. A tall 8 oz jar and a squat 3 oz tin cost very different amounts to box.
- Structure. A folding carton is the economical route. A rigid box or a two-piece lid-and-base is more material and more hand work.
- Board. Heavier board protects better and costs more. A candle that is not shipped does not need the strongest board.
- Print coverage. Full-bleed dark colors take more ink than a logo on kraft.

- Inserts. Glass needs holding still. An insert adds a part, but it is cheaper than replacing broken candles.
How does quantity change the unit cost?
Unit cost falls as quantity rises, because setup is spread across more boxes. We have no minimum order, so a new candle brand can start with a small run, but the per-box cost on a handful will be higher than on a larger order. Order the small run to prove the fit, then reorder in volume once the design is settled.
How do I keep the cost down without hurting the product?
Start by sizing the box to the jar, not to a catalog. A box a quarter inch too wide on every side wastes board across the whole run. Our mailer box sizes guide shows the measuring method, and the same clearance rule works for a candle carton: measure the jar at its widest point and add a small allowance in total, not per side.
Then pick one place to spend. For a gift candle, that might be a single finish on the logo. For a shipped candle it should be the insert. Kraft board with a one-color print looks deliberate and uses little ink. What we do not recommend is cutting the insert to save money on a shipped glass candle, because one cracked jar costs more than the part.
