Why a window helps a candle sell
Candles are bought with the eyes first. Wax color, a hand-poured top, a wood wick, a pretty label: none of that is visible in a plain closed carton, so the shopper has to trust the picture on the front. A window removes the doubt. It also lets people check the jar size at a glance, which settles the eight ounce or twelve ounce question at a glance.
The trade-off is light. Dyed wax and some fragrance oils fade in sustained light, and a window puts the jar in the light. If your candles use pale dyes, keep them off sunny shelves, or choose a smaller window so most of the jar stays in shadow.
Getting the size and window position right
Measure the jar at its widest point and its full height, lid included if there is one. Add about 1/8 inch of clearance per side. Jars are rarely perfect cylinders, so measure two or three samples from the batch. Then decide the window shape. A tall rectangle shows the label. A round or arched window frames the flame side of a hand-poured top. A wide band across the middle shows wax color best.
Keep at least a half inch of solid board around the window. A huge opening makes the front panel floppy, and the carton starts to bow when stacked. If you want to show a lot of the jar, consider a sleeve and tray candle box, where the structure stays firm even with a large reveal.
Window film or an open cut-out
Clear film keeps fingers and dust off the candle, and it is what most buyers expect. An open die-cut costs less to produce and makes the box easier to recycle with ordinary paper. The downside is that people poke the wax, so an open window suits a jar with a lid. Tell us which route you prefer and we will mark it on the dieline.

Check a finished candle against the window opening before you approve the dieline.
The jar lid, if you use one, also changes the fit. Include it in the height you give us, and tell us if the lid is wood, metal or glass.
When a window is the wrong choice
If the candles travel by post, a window box alone is not enough protection. Put the jar in a candle shipping box with an insert, then use the window carton as the inner retail pack.
