The lid fits over the base with a small gap, so how snug it is depends on measurement. Too tight and the customer struggles to open it. Sizing for a jar candle
Measure the jar diameter at its widest point, usually the rim or the lid, and the full height with any lid fitted. Add about 1/8 inch of clearance per side and a little extra height so the lid clears. If the candle has a wooden lid, a wick trimmer or a small card tucked on top, include them in the height. A tray that is too deep wastes board, and too shallow leaves the jar rattling. A die cut paperboard insert or a collar holds the jar centred, which matters if the box will travel.
Board, print and what to watch
Folding carton paperboard around 16 to 24 pt is the usual stock, and heavier jars may call for thicker board or corrugated for shipping. Kraft board suits natural soy and botanical brands, while white board shows colour and foil crisply. Matte or soft-touch coating, foil stamping on the brand name, embossing, spot UV and a window cutout are common finishes. Candles with strong scent can mark uncoated board over time, so a coated stock is worth considering for shelf stock.

Use the inside of the lid. Most candle makers leave it blank, which wastes the best canvas on the box. When the lid comes off, the customer is looking straight at the underside, so a short note about the scent, the pour or the maker works better there than on the outside. A printed card tucked under the jar, with burn time guidance and a reorder code, costs almost nothing extra and keeps the brand in the room after the box is recycled.
