A custom mylar food storage bag is a heat-sealed foil-laminate pouch that shields dry food from light, oxygen and moisture, printed with your own branding. TBPB makes them to your size and film specification with no minimum order, and if you bring a written quote for the same specs, we will beat it.

What a storage bag is actually for

Most mylar bags sold for retail snacks are built to look good for a few months. A storage bag has a different job. It is meant to hold rice, dried beans, rolled oats, pasta, flour or freeze-dried meals for a long stretch, usually with an oxygen absorber packet dropped in before the seal. The barrier does the work, so the artwork should never come at the cost of the film structure.

That is why the first question we ask is not about the print. It is how long the food needs to last and what is going to happen to the bag in the meantime. A bag that sits in a dark pantry has a very different life from one that gets stacked in a bucket, dragged out of a truck, or shipped to a customer.

Film gauge, foil layer and why thin bags fail

Mylar film thickness is measured in mils, and storage bags are normally heavier than snack pouches. A thicker laminate resists pinholes at the corners and folds, which is where long-term bags usually let air in. Pinholes matter more than anyone expects: a single one can slowly defeat an oxygen absorber. A foil layer in the laminate gives a much better light and oxygen barrier than a metallized film, so for multi-year storage we point people toward foil-based structures rather than the cheapest option.

Tell us the product and how long it should keep. We will recommend a gauge, and we will tell you plainly if the bag you have in mind is thinner than the job requires.

Sealing, absorbers and the size you really need

These bags are closed with a heat seal across the top, either with a sealing bar or a household iron on a hard edge for small batches. A zipper is useful for repeat opening, but a zipper alone is not a long-term closure, so storage bags are normally sealed first and the zipper kept as a convenience for the end user. If you want to see how the sealing options compare, our heat seal mylar bags page covers that in detail, and the mylar vacuum seal bags suit products that need air pulled out rather than absorbed.

For size, work from the volume of the food, not the weight. Fill a container with the product, pour it into a measuring jug, and add some headspace so the seal is not fighting the contents. Oxygen absorbers are sized by the volume of the bag, so a bag that is too large wastes absorber capacity.

  • Flat pouches or stand-up shapes; a gusset helps larger fills sit upright. See stand-up mylar bags for gusseted formats.
  • Custom print on one or both sides, with a matte or gloss finish
  • Optional tear notches, hang holes, zipper and clear window panels
  • Foil-based or metallized film, depending on storage time
  • Any size you can measure, from single-serve to bucket-liner scale

Labelling and food-contact responsibility

TBPB prints the artwork you supply. Nutrition panels, ingredient statements, allergen text and storage instructions are your responsibility, and so is confirming that the film structure is suitable for direct food contact in your market. Check that with your own regulatory adviser before you commit to a print run. We can print a clean blank area on the back for a label if you would rather add regulated copy later.

To get started, send the product, the approximate fill volume and the quantity, even if it is one bag. We will draw the template and quote it. You can browse the full mylar bag range too.

Frequently asked questions

  1. Do mylar food storage bags need an oxygen absorber?

For long-term storage of dry food, yes, that is the normal method. The film blocks outside air, and the absorber removes the oxygen sealed in with the food. Without one, trapped oxygen can still degrade fats and flavor over time. Absorbers are not suitable for every food, so check yours first.

  2. How thick should a mylar storage bag be?

Thicker is safer for long storage because it resists pinholes at folds and corners. Heavier gauges, often 5 mil and above, are common for multi-year grain and bean storage. Tell us your product and target shelf life and we will recommend a film structure that fits.

  3. Can I print my brand on mylar food storage bags?

Yes. We print your logo and artwork directly on the film, front and back, with matte or gloss finishes and optional clear windows. Send the artwork or just a logo and size, and we will set up the template and show you a proof first.

  4. Are the bags food safe?

We do not make certification claims for you. Mylar is widely used for dry food storage, but you are responsible for confirming food-contact suitability and all label content with your own regulatory adviser. Tell us the product and we will help you pick a sensible film structure.

  5. Can I get a zipper and a heat seal on the same bag?

Yes. Many buyers heat seal the top for storage and keep a zipper below it so the customer can reopen and reseal after the first use. Be aware that a zipper alone is not a long-term closure, so the heat seal remains the primary barrier.

  6. What is the minimum order for custom mylar food storage bags?

There is no minimum order. You can order one bag to test a size and seal, or thousands for a launch. Send the dimensions and the quantity and we will quote it, and if you bring a written quote for the same specs we will beat it.

Product Overview

Mylar food storage bags are built for one job: keeping dry food stable on the shelf for as long as you need. The laminated film blocks light, oxygen and moisture, and a heat seal closes the bag once the food and an optional oxygen absorber are inside. TBPB prints them with your branding in the size and gauge you choose, so a pantry staple or an emergency food kit looks like a real product, not a generic pouch.

What are Mylar Food Storage Bags?

Start with the food and the storage time. Measure the volume of what you are filling, then add headspace so the seal sits clean. For long storage choose a heavier foil-based laminate over a thin metallized film, and think about whether the customer needs a zipper after opening. Print is flexible: matte suits earthy pantry brands, gloss suits bright retail. Add a blank label zone if your regulated copy changes between batches. Check the finished size against the bucket, tote or shelf it has to live in, because a bag that fits the food but not the container causes more trouble than a slightly smaller fill. Not sure? Send the product and quantity and we will suggest a structure.
