A heat-sealed bag is fine until the customer opens it. After that, the product sits in a torn pouch held shut by a clip, and freshness is a matter of luck. A press-to-close zipper fixes that. It sits just below the top seal, so the bag can be cut or torn open at the top and then pressed shut again repeatedly. A zipper is not airtight in the way a sealed pouch is, so if you need a long shelf life before opening, the heat seal does the real work and the zipper handles the use afterwards.
Shape, size and fill

Powders and fine grounds are the usual culprits for a dirty zipper track, and a short fill line or a slightly taller bag fixes most of it.
