Why hang a health product at all
Pharmacy and drugstore walls are full of peg hooks, and shelf space on them is tight. A hanger box lets small, light products sit on a hook at eye level instead of lying flat in a bin: first-aid items, bandages, test strips, lip care, wipes, small devices, travel-size wellness products. The tab also gives the retailer a clean way to merchandise and the shopper a quick way to lift the box off the wall. If the product sells flat on a shelf, though, a hanger tab adds cost with no benefit, and a standard carton is the better answer.
The tab is the weak point, so design it first
A hanger box fails in one place, the tab, and a failure means the product ends up on the floor. The weight of the contents hangs from a small area of paperboard, which tears if the board is too thin or the hole sits too close to the edge. For light products, a single-layer tab on 16 pt to 24 pt paperboard is fine. For heavier items such as a boxed device or a multi-pack, a double-layer or reinforced tab and a stiffer board are worth it, and a slot-style opening spreads load better than a tiny round hole. Sizing the carton
Measure the product or its inner pack at length, width and height. For a folding carton, plan about 1/8 inch of clearance per side, so the item slides in without being forced and does not rattle. Add depth if you need a leaflet or instruction sheet in the box. If the product is a pouch, tube or loose items, an insert or a header-style card inside will hold it upright and keep its shape in the carton. Where the item is really a blister pack or a carded product, a header card might do the job with less board.
Print, copy and compliance
Printing is full-color CMYK with Pantone matching, and a matte or gloss aqueous coating, with soft-touch or spot UV available for brand details. Keep key text and the logo on the visible panel when the box hangs, which means the lower part of the front face, not the area behind the tab. Healthcare products carry labeling rules. Drug facts panels, warnings, lot numbers and any claims are your responsibility, and TBPB prints the artwork you supply. Check the final copy with your own regulatory adviser before sending files.
