What a ballot box actually has to do

A ballot container has one job that most packaging never has: let paper in and keep everything else out. That means a slot sized for the ballot and nothing larger, a lid or flap that cannot be opened without it being obvious, and walls stiff enough that nobody can reach in around the opening. Decoration is secondary. If the box looks official and the slot is wrong, the box has failed.

For paper ballots in a standard letter or half-letter size, the slot is usually cut a little wider than the folded ballot and no taller than needed. We cut it on the die, so every box in a run has the identical opening.

Board and construction choices

Most ballot boxes are corrugated, because a flat-packed corrugated box holds its shape when it fills with paper and can be stacked at a polling location or office. Single-wall E-flute or B-flute is the usual starting point. Heavier counts or a double-wall build make sense when the box will be carried, locked into a cart, or opened and resealed several times.

Lighter paperboard works for small contests, raffle entries and suggestion drops where the box sits on a counter and nobody is trying to defeat it. Tamper evidence: what packaging can and cannot do

A printed box can make tampering visible. A glued seam that tears the print when pulled, a tape seal across the closure, or a numbered seal label placed over the flap all give an election worker something concrete to check. What a box cannot do is replace the chain-of-custody rules your jurisdiction requires. Rules for seals, container specifications and ballot handling come from the election authority or your organisation’s bylaws, so get those specifications first and send them to us. Measure the ballot as it will actually sit in the box, folded or flat, then add about a quarter inch of clearance so it drops in without catching. For a collection box, decide how many ballots it has to hold, stack that many sheets and measure the stack, since paper bulks more than people expect.
