A PR box has an unusual job for packaging: it is designed to be filmed. When a brand sends a product to an influencer or a press contact, the box is the first thing that appears in the video, so it has to create a moment rather than simply survive the trip. The packaging is not protecting the product so much as introducing it.

What a PR box has to do that ordinary packaging does not

A retail box is opened once, alone, by someone who already bought the thing. A PR box is opened on camera, by someone deciding in real time whether this is worth their audience’s attention. That changes the brief in three ways.

It has to open slowly. A lid that lifts with a little resistance and settles closed with a magnet reads on video. A flap that tears does not.

It has to reveal in an order you chose. The recipient should meet one thing at a time, not the whole contents at once.

And it has to arrive perfect. A scuffed corner is invisible to a normal customer and fatal on camera, because the shot cannot be retaken.

Designing the reveal

The strongest PR boxes are staged. A typical sequence: the lid comes off, tissue or a printed card sits on top, the hero product sits in a cut insert below it, and something small and unexpected hides underneath the tray. Four beats, each with its own frame in the video.

The practical version of this is deciding what the recipient sees first, second, and last, then building the insert to enforce that order. It is the difference between a box that films well and a box that a creator dumps out onto a table.

Structures worth considering

Rigid box with a magnetic closure. The default for a reason. It is heavy in the hand, opens with a satisfying pull, and the whole inside surface is printable. If you only build one PR format, build this.

Drawer or slide box. The product slides out of a sleeve. It films differently, sideways rather than downward, and it holds its contents securely when the outer sleeve is branded.

Shadow box with a lift-off lid. A deeper tray with a fitted insert, closest to a display case. It suits a single hero product where the surrounding empty space is doing the work.

Printing each recipient’s name

The single thing most likely to get a PR box posted is the recipient’s own name printed on it. Not a sticker added afterward, printed as part of the piece.

This is practical on a PR run precisely because the runs are short. A send is usually somewhere between twenty and two hundred boxes, which is the range where printing each one individually is straightforward rather than exotic. Send us the list with the artwork and each box, sleeve, or insert card can carry its own name.

The same approach covers a handwritten-style note per recipient, a different message for tier-one contacts, or a numbered edition across the run.

The shipper is not optional

This is the mistake that costs the most and gets noticed the least. A magnetic rigid box shipped as its own parcel arrives with rubbed corners, courier labels stuck across the artwork, and scuff marks down the lid. The recipient films it anyway, and the brand looks careless.

Ship the PR box inside a plain corrugated shipper cut to its footprint. The shipper takes the labels and the handling, and the box the creator opens on camera is untouched. It is a second piece of packaging that never appears in the video, which is exactly why it works.

Inserts

The insert holds the product in position and sets the reveal, so it is worth more attention than the outside of the box.

Die-cut paperboard trays are the most versatile and the easiest to make in a short run. Foam reads dense and premium and suits heavier or fragile items. Molded pulp reads deliberately sustainable and is the right choice when the brand story is about materials.

Whichever you use, the cavity has to fit the actual product with a little clearance. Send us the product or its real measurements rather than the artwork dimensions.

Making the right number

Seeding lists tend to be smaller than people expect. A focused send to twenty-five well-chosen contacts usually outperforms two hundred boxes sprayed across a tier list, and it means the boxes themselves can be better made.

There is no minimum order here, so the run can match the list instead of the list being padded to reach a minimum. If the campaign works, the reorder runs from the same approved dieline.

A word on excess

PR boxes have a reputation problem, and it is worth naming. Creators increasingly call out sends that arrive as an enormous box holding one small item wrapped in three layers of plastic. That video does more damage than no video.

The fix is not a plainer box, it is a tighter fit. Size the box to the contents with enough space to stage the reveal and no more, use paper-based inserts where you can, and skip the plastic film. A well-proportioned box in board reads more considered than an oversized one in foam, and it films better too.

Questions people ask before they order

Can every box have a different name on it?

Yes. PR runs are short enough that printing each piece individually is straightforward. Send the recipient list with your artwork and the name can appear on the box, the sleeve, or an insert card.

How many should I make?

Match the run to your actual seeding list rather than rounding up. Twenty-five boxes to well-chosen contacts generally does more than two hundred scattered ones, and there is no minimum here forcing the number up.

Do I need a separate shipping box?

Yes, and it is the most commonly skipped step. Shipping the PR box directly means courier labels and scuffs on the surface the creator films. A plain corrugated outer solves it completely.

What is the difference between a PR box and a mailer box?

A mailer is built to ship and be recycled. A PR box is built to be opened on camera and often kept. Different construction, different finish, different job.

Can you make the insert as well?

Yes, and the insert is where most of the design effort goes, because it controls the order the recipient sees things in. We cut it around your actual product.

How far ahead should I order?

Work back from the campaign date. Production runs 7 to 14 business days after artwork approval, and there is a proofing round before that, so give yourself a comfortable margin ahead of any embargo or launch.

Can I keep the packaging light on materials?

Yes, and it usually films better. Paper-based inserts, no plastic film, and a box sized honestly to its contents reads more considered than an oversized build.
