What makes a box luxury rather than just expensive
Fit, weight and restraint. A luxury box closes with a soft, slow resistance, the product sits snug in its insert, and the design has one or two deliberate moves rather than six. Customers notice the weight of the board and the quality of the opening before they read a word on the lid.

What finishes work on a luxury box
Foil, embossing and coatings change how a box catches light and feels under a thumb. Use one, maybe two.

How do I design the insert and size the box
Size the product first, the insert second, the box last. The insert sets the real inside dimensions.
Here is an example. A gift set holds three candle jars in a row, each 2 inches across and 2 inches tall. Allow 0.25 inch between jars and at each end, which gives an inside width of 3 x 2 + 4 x 0.25 = 7 inches. Depth is the jar plus 0.25 inch each side, so 2.5 inches. Height is the jar plus about 0.5 inch of lid clearance, so 2.5 inches. The inside size is 7 x 2.5 x 2.5 inches. Now add wall thickness for the outside size.

What goes wrong with luxury boxes, and how to avoid it
Most problems come from the same four places.
- Loose fit. The product slides when the lid closes. Fix it with a snugger insert, tested on a prototype.
- Color surprise. A color on screen looks different on wrapped paper. Ask for a sample against your brand color before approving the run.
- Cracked edges. Paper stretches at corners and can split if the artwork runs hard to an edge. Keep critical art away from folds.
- Crushed corners in transit. Rigid boxes resist crushing from the top but not a sharp knock to a corner. Pack them inside a shipper.
The fix for nearly all of these is the same: order a prototype first. With no minimum order, a single sample is a normal first step, and it costs far less than a bad run.
When should I not use a luxury box
If the box is thrown away in seconds, or if you ship through harsh parcel networks, rigid is hard to justify.
