A luxury gift box is a rigid box: 2 to 3 mm greyboard, wrapped in printed or textured paper, with a lid that settles closed and an interior that holds the product still. What makes it feel expensive is mostly physics, not decoration. Weight in the hand, walls that do not flex, a lid that closes with soft resistance instead of a rattle, and a product that does not move when the box is tilted. We build them as lid and base, magnetic flap, drawer and book style boxes, in any size and with no minimum order. The number that sets the feel is board caliper: 2 mm reads as premium, 2.5 to 3 mm reads as luxury, and anything under 1.5 mm reads as a carton no matter what is printed on it.
The second thing that separates a luxury box from a nice one is the insert. A product that sits in a cut-out, at the right depth, with a finger notch to lift it, tells the customer somebody thought about this. A product rolling around in tissue tells them nobody did.

Board, wrap and finish
Board is the skeleton. 2 mm greyboard for boxes under 8 inches, 2.5 mm for 8 to 12 inches, 3 mm above that so a wide lid does not flex. The wrap is the skin: 128 to 157 gsm art paper for printed designs, or a textured stock such as linen, leatherette or a soft touch laminate for a tactile finish. Foil stamping in gold, silver, copper or a custom color, blind embossing of a logo, and spot UV on a matte wrap are the usual finishes, used one or two at a time. Too many finishes on one lid reads as effort rather than confidence.

Inserts
The insert holds the product still and presents it at the right height. Die-cut EVA foam, cut to the product outline and wrapped in the same paper as the box or in a contrasting satin, is the premium option. Paperboard or corrugated inserts wrapped in paper do the same job at lower cost and weight. Silk or satin lining goes over a paperboard platform. For sets, each item gets its own cavity, sized with a sixteenth of an inch of clearance so it lifts out cleanly without rattling.
Shipping a rigid box
Rigid boxes ship assembled, which means they take space. For direct to customer orders we size a corrugated outer to the rigid box with half an inch of clearance so it arrives without a crushed corner. Collapsible rigid boxes, which fold flat on a magnetic frame and pop up, exist for brands that ship in volume and want to cut storage; they cost more per box and feel slightly lighter, so they suit boxes over 10 inches where the storage saving is real.
