Sizing a pillow box for what it holds
The box is narrow in the middle and tapers toward the ends, so the usable space is smaller than the flat length and width suggest. Measure the gift in its widest dimension and its longest dimension, then size the box so the product sits in the centre section, with about 1/8 inch of clearance on the width. Do not size to the full length of the box, because the curved ends cannot hold anything.
Depth is limited too. A pillow box works best for gifts up to about the thickness of a stack of cards or a small tin. Anything taller starts to bulge the sides and stresses the seam.
Board, print and finish
Gift pillow boxes are normally made from folding carton paperboard in the 16 to 24 pt range, or from kraft board for a natural look. Thin board bends more easily into the curve, so heavier stock is not always better. If your design has large flat colour, ask for aqueous coating, because scuffs on dark panels show quickly.

A ribbon or a wrap of kraft twine around the middle also holds the closure firm and finishes the gift look without extra printing.
