What the curved lid does
A flat-topped box is practical. A domed lid is memorable. The curve catches light differently, it signals that something inside is meant to be opened with some ceremony, and it gives you a shape that is hard to confuse with a competitor’s carton. That is why round top boxes turn up at bakeries, candy shops, wedding tables, holiday markets and gift kiosks.
Most round top boxes are a single die-cut sheet of paperboard. The lid panel curves over the contents and tucks or locks into the body. Because the box starts flat, it can be stored and shipped flat and assembled in seconds. If you are comparing it with other gift styles, the one piece boxes are simpler in shape, and the flip top boxes have a hinged lid with a straighter profile.
Sizing with a dome in mind
The dome adds height at the center of the lid but not at the edges. That means the usable inner height is greatest in the middle and shorter at the sides. Place tall items down the center and keep short items near the edges. To size the box, measure the product’s length, width and height, then add around 1/8 inch of clearance per side. Make sure the peak of the product sits under the highest point of the curve, not under the edge.

Board, print and what holds the curve
A curved lid needs board that bends cleanly without cracking. Folding carton paperboard in the 16 to 24 pt range is a common choice, and lighter weights curve more easily. Very thick board can crack along the bend, so we do not recommend it for this style. For printing, CMYK and Pantone-matched colors both work. Matte aqueous coating gives a soft look. Gloss makes the dome catch light. Soft-touch lamination feels excellent in the hand, but test the curve first, since heavy lamination can affect how the board bends.
For events, think about how the boxes will be handled before you pick the closure. A tuck is fast to close but can pop open if a box is stacked or carried in a bag. A lock tab is slower to assemble but stays shut. If guests will carry the boxes home loose, choose the lock. If they will sit on a table until the end of the night, a tuck is fine. A simple ribbon or sticker across the lid also helps, and it gives you another spot for a name or date.
