What makes a box rigid
A folding carton is a single sheet of paperboard scored and folded. A rigid box is different: layers of chipboard, usually 1.5 to 3 mm thick, are cut, assembled into a base and lid, and wrapped in printed or plain paper. That is why a rigid box does not flex when you squeeze it and why it survives being reused as a keepsake. It also means it ships and stores assembled, so plan for the space it takes up.
Choosing a closure
A lift-off lid is the simplest and works for most gifts. A magnetic flap closes with a soft click and suits a product that is opened often. A shoulder neck, where the lid sits over a raised collar on the base, gives a layered look for fragrances and watches. Keeping white white

Sizing and inserts
Measure the product and add about an eighth of an inch of clearance per side for a loose fit, or cut an insert to hold it exactly. Foam, EVA or paperboard inserts keep jewelry, bottles and electronics from sliding. Lined trays look finer but add a step, so ask for them early. The wrap overlaps the chipboard edges slightly, which means interior dimensions are always a little smaller than the outside; we calculate that for you on the dieline.
When a rigid box is more than you need
Rigid boxes cost more to make and take more room to ship than folding cartons. If the box is only protecting a product for a short trip, or if you are sending hundreds of low-value gifts, a folding carton such as a tuck top box may do the job. Ask for a sample if the box will carry anything heavy. A lid that fits correctly lifts off with a little resistance and settles back flat. If it pops open or sticks, the tolerance needs adjusting, and that is much easier to fix on a sample than on a full run.
