What makes a luxury box cost more than a standard carton
It is mostly construction. A standard folding carton is cut, creased and folded flat. A rigid luxury box is built from thick board that is wrapped in printed or textured paper, and the corners are usually formed and assembled by hand or semi-automatically. More material, more steps, more labor.

A well-printed folding carton on heavy board with one foil element can read as expensive on a shelf for a lot less than a full rigid build. We say this plainly because it is true and because it saves buyers money. If the box sits on a retail shelf next to similar products, start there and quote both.
Rigid earns its cost when the box is kept: a gift set, a keepsake, a launch kit, anything where the opening is part of the product. How does the product size change the price
Directly. Inside size sets the board area, the wrap area, the insert size and the freight volume. A worked example shows how quickly it adds up.
Say you sell a 2 oz glass dropper bottle that measures 1.6 inches across and 4.3 inches tall. Measure the widest point and the full height with the cap on. Add 0.15 inch of clearance per side and 0.3 inch of height. The inside of the box becomes 1.9 x 1.9 x 4.6 inches. If you instead round up to 2.5 x 2.5 x 5.5 inches to be safe, the bottle rattles, the insert needs more material, the wrap covers more area and the box ships bulkier. You pay more for a worse fit.
Measure the real product, add small clearance, and ask for a prototype before approving a run. Prototypes are where size mistakes are cheap to fix.
Where should I spend and where should I save
Spend where the customer touches. The lid, the opening, the first thing they see. Save on the parts nobody looks at twice.
- Spend on a good lid and a snug fit. A lid that lifts with a soft resistance does more for perceived quality than any print effect.
