Nail polish sells in a crowded wall of near-identical bottles, so the box is often the only thing a shopper sees: a shade name, a color swatch and a brand mark. That makes the front panel work harder than on larger cosmetics. Many brands print the actual shade as a flood of color across the face, and put the shade number and finish, such as crème, shimmer or gel-look, on a clear label area where it is easy to read at arm’s length.

A standard folding carton on 16 to 24 pt paperboard suits most polish brands. For a gift set, a small rigid box in the 1.5 to 3 mm range reads as a present. Finish choices are where polish brands tend to get creative.
