A gable box is a folding carton whose top folds up into a built in carry handle, so the box is its own bag. It is cut from one flat blank, ships flat, and squares up by hand in a few seconds; the two gable ends fold in and the handle locks through a slot. We make them in kraft, white and full color, from a 4 inch favor size up to a 12 inch lunch and gift size, with a window or a printed handle where they help, and with no minimum order. The number that sets the size is the handle: a gable handle needs about 1.5 inches of height above the contents to fold and lock, so the box is always taller than the thing inside it.

Gable boxes carry favors, treats, bakery goods, lunches, gift sets, subscription samples and event swag. They present well on a table and they walk out the door without a second piece of packaging, which is the whole point.

Sizes

Gable boxes are sized as length by width by height to the top of the handle. The usable height inside is the total height less about 1.5 inches. Board follows size: 16 to 18 point paperboard up to 8 inches, E flute corrugated above that or for anything over about 2 pounds.

Kraft, white or printed

Natural kraft is the everyday choice: it reads handmade, takes one or two color print well, and hides scuffs. White board gives the cleanest full color print for a branded gift or retail box. Both can carry a die-cut window with clear film so the contents show, and both print on the handle panel, which is the part people see as they carry it. For food, a grease resistant coating on the inside keeps the box clean; for bakery, a window plus a kraft body is the standard look.

Assembly and shipping

Gable boxes ship flat in bundles and square up without tape: push the sides out, fold the base flaps under, fold the gable ends in, bring the handles together and lock the tab through the slot. A team assembles a hundred in a few minutes. Filled boxes stack two high safely in paperboard and higher in E flute. For direct to customer orders, a gable box goes inside a plain corrugated shipper; the handle is not built for a parcel network.

Gable box questions

  1. What is a gable box?

A folding carton cut from one flat blank whose top folds up into a carry handle, so the box works as its own bag. It ships flat, squares up by hand without tape, and locks the handle through a slot. Used for favors, treats, lunches, gifts and event swag.

  2. What sizes do gable boxes come in?

From about 4 by 2.5 by 2.5 inches for a favor up to 12 by 7 by 7 for a gift set, with 6 by 3.5 by 3.5 and 8 by 4.75 by 5.25 the most common. The handle needs about 1.5 inches of height above the contents to fold and lock, so size the box taller than the item.

  3. Are gable boxes safe for food?

Yes, with a food grade board and, for greasy or moist food, a grease resistant inside coating. Bakery gable boxes usually pair a kraft body with a clear window. Tell us the food and we will specify the coating.

  4. Can I ship a gable box to a customer?

Inside a corrugated shipper, yes. The gable handle is built for carrying, not for a parcel network, so the gable goes in a plain outer for shipping and comes out as the presentation box.

  5. Is there a minimum order?

No. Fifty for an event or a production run for retail. Free design and dieline, free samples, and a printed proof before the run.

No minimum order. One or a full run. Free design and dieline, and a printed proof before production. Free samples so you can load one and carry it before you commit. Price match: send a written quote for the same size, board, print and quantity and we will beat it.

Paperboard or E flute for a gable box

Paperboard, 16 to 18 point, is right up to about 8 inches and 2 pounds: favors, cookies, candles, small gifts. E flute corrugated takes over for lunches, catering boxes and gift sets, because the handle carries the whole weight and a flute board does not tear at the slot. If the box is carried by the handle with more than a couple of pounds in it, choose E flute. Send us the contents and we will pick the board and send a sample to load.
